Apps missing after update
Carv911 -
Hello, For the past few days, version 126.0.6478.256 (Official Build) (64-bit) has been installed on my Acer Chromebook. This has resulted in a number of applications disappearing, and I don't know how to reinstall them. These mainly include: Google Play Store, Netflix, BlueMail, etc. I've read a lot of things online, I've also tried many things on my Chromebook but, with no results. What should I do? What is the solution? I've read that there might be a way to revert to the previous version, but if that's the case, I haven't found the way. I'm very sad about this, I've never had any problems with my device. Thank you in advance for your responses,

Hello,
How old is your Chromebook (give the exact model)? Because the current version of Chrome OS is 129.0.6668.112 (Official Build) (64-bit). I assume your Chromebook has reached its end of support, Google no longer provides updates, and this is causing issues with some applications.
For the Play Store, it's simple: display this page in Chrome: https://play.google.com/store/apps?hl=fr
and you transform the page into an application. To do this, when the page is displayed, go to the Chrome menu "Cast, Save and Share" and click on the submenu "Install page as an application" and a shortcut will be added to the ChromeOS start menu.
Similarly for Netflix, go to the Netflix login page: https://www.netflix.com/fr/
And once logged in, transform the page into an application.
This method is valid for all pages you want to transform into applications. They then open in their own window.
But for Android applications, you need to reinstall them via the Play Store.
Hello,
Indeed. So it might be because it's no longer maintained that it has been removed from Google's database...
What year was it released? We can find a few on eBay, but it's impossible to know the release year. The -1H mention in the reference seems to correspond to Chromebooks released at least 6 or 7 years ago; I have an old CB311-1HT in the attic that dates back to 2017. Those released more recently had the designation -2H or -2HT.
Hello,
Thank you :-)
I need to look for the invoice regarding the purchase date :-)
In fact, I am happy with this version 129.0.6668.112 (Official build) (64 bits). I find that my Chromebook is working very well. Maybe it has gained a bit of speed. Or is it just an impression...
Regarding PWA Apps, I have read a lot about this topic. It seems that this standard will increasingly apply in the future. So, I tell myself that I am part of the pioneers :-)
I found some Apps that are already PWA compatible: Spotify, WhatsApp, and Outlook.
For Outlook, a tab appeared in the top right corner offering me to switch to the PWA version. Which I did.
It seems that Facebook is working on a PWA version....
Well, I can't reinstall the Netflix App and the BlueMail App.
For Netflix, I went through: Google Chrome -> Netflix -> My bookmarks. It works.
Is there a site that only offers PWA Apps? I'm thinking about my Backgammon game. :-)
Thank you & have a nice weekend everyone :-)
On the version you mentioned (129), Google added access to Gemini, its own artificial intelligence. Do you have it too?
I would add to your list Skype, Microsoft 365 online, Photopea (kind of Photoshop).

Any webpage (Facebook for example) can be turned into a web app that runs in its own window and has a shortcut in the menu or in the quick launch bar.
By enabling Linux, you'll have access to thousands of Linux software like LibreOffice, Gimp.

The only thing you'll miss is the Android applications. I don't have a solution to recover BlueMail. Nothing prevents you from turning your ISP's webmail page into an app. Or use Gmail, you can retrieve your other email accounts in it, but emails are only checked every 2 hours, which is its weakness; however, its anti-spam filter is exceptionally effective.

Regarding: "On the version you mentioned (129), Google added access to Gemini, its in-house artificial intelligence. Do you have it too?"
I found Gemini there (see screenshot) but not in the startup menu.
Tap twice on the Gemini icon and select "Pin to shelf."
Have you tried it? It's quite impressive, I gave it a photo of a mushroom growing on tree trunks and asked it what it was. It gave me a whole explanation about that mushroom. There will definitely be more than one person using it for their essays at school!
Hello,
In the end, I kept the version in question. I find it fast (maybe even faster than before) and stable.
Going back to the previous version would have only created major problems and losses. Also, for a layman like me, embarking on such an adventure... no thanks.
I set Netflix back up using Google Chrome.
I no longer need BlueMail. Indeed, I was able to add my POP3 address to Gmail (I admit it wasn't easy).
I'm playing backgammon again through the games offered by Facebook.
While browsing the Internet, I found sites that offer Apps already compatible with PWA.
After a big scare, a week of thinking and searching, everything is good for me.
I must admit that Google played a nasty trick on us with that... :-(
Have a nice day,
Hello,
"I must admit that Google has played a nasty trick on us with this... :-("
The least they could have done was inform the affected users! A simple notification with a link to a webpage explaining the ins and outs would have sufficed. Everyone understands that Google cannot indefinitely maintain old Chromebooks. Blocking the version of ChromeOS is not too serious as it doesn't remove any functionalities from the Chromebook, but removing all installed Android apps without warning on the pretext that some may not work in the future can have significant consequences for the user.
A big fat zero in communication for Google!
Thank you for your response, so now I want to install YouTube Create or something else that’s been removed, it’s a hassle (((( I just reset Chrome thinking it would work again ))). I have a message like this that appears and I don’t know if I should update again or not?

Thank you for the response.
It's an ACER Chromebook CB514-1H Series / Model: N18Q3.
I will try for the Play Store and Netflix.
Have a good evening :-)
Are you sure about the reference? It doesn't appear in Google's database.
