Hello,
Good evening,
I have an HP DeskJet 4120e printer.
I have a problem with my scanner.
When I try to scan a document via HP SMART, I get an error message "unable to connect to the scanner." However, my printer is recognized.
When using HP Print and Scan Doctor, it shows in red "device status."
I can print and make copies.
However, the direct Wi-Fi icon appears on the control panel.
I am attaching screenshots of my printer so that you can help me.

Hello,
In my opinion, this problem has always existed, if the configuration has remained the same..??
-- Indeed, these machines use two connection ports... one for printing.. and the other for scanning... so it needs to be made possible... and the printer must be properly connected for it to work...
-- The connections on the USB socket of the BOX... and "Wifi Direct" only manage the connection for printing... and not for scanning from the PC... While the scan works for making a photocopy, on the printer, using the printer's buttons...
-- For it to work, you need a connection or link .. Via USB cable... Via wired Ethernet network... or via "Wifi" (just Wifi), not "wifidirect"
So, it is necessary to remove the existing installation, restart the PC, redo the Wifi installation, restart the PC again... and try.
Hello.
The printer is connected via USB and not over wifi.
I have already reinstalled the printer but nothing changes.
Thank you.
Hello
You are the third in a few days to have problems scanning with HP printers, probably due to HP Smart.

What is well conceived is clearly expressed,
And the words to say it come easily.

Hello,
There may indeed be a problem with HP Smart, either directly or indirectly (a conflicting version update via Windows Update that we didn't ask for).
In the second case, you would need to uninstall the driver of the problematic update and reinstall HP Smart from the manufacturer's website.
I no longer have an HP printer, but paradoxically, I use the HP Scan and Capture app, which can be an alternative and work wonders, even on my old Epson that refuses to acknowledge Windows 11.
Moreover, I am not sure about the usefulness of HP Smart, which is notorious bloatware; it used to be enough, or at least it was the case at one time, to install the available print and scan drivers from HP, bypassing HP Smart, which didn’t add anything to the conversation.
Hello,
I am not sure about the usefulness of HP Smart either
The problem is that HP printers, at least the ones I've seen and the one we are interested in here, do not have a "Scan" button.
On a Canon printer (the ones I know best), you place the document on the glass, press Scan, and it's done.
So HP printer users end up using the in-house software "HP Smart" to do their scanning. They won't look any further, and you can't blame them.
I also see that marcounet33500 managed to scan using the Windows tool Fax and Scan.

This still suggests that the issue is indeed with the HP Smart software.
Is it connected via USB to the PC..? or to the BOX..??
Sorry, you mentioned the Wifi-direct icon in your first POST...
Disable your Wi-Fi to see if it still prints..?? or not..? via USB..?
Maybe... it's the direct Wi-Fi that's working... and you think you're on USB..?
I have disabled the Wi-Fi, it prints but does not scan.
I still have the direct Wi-Fi icon displayed on the printer's control panel.
Following Brucine's idea, I advise you to download the installation software from the HP website https://support.hp.com/fr-fr/drivers/hp-deskjet-4100e-all-in-one-series/2100187845
and take this one: "HP Easy Start Printer Setup Software - Offline Use Enabled"
Completely uninstall your printer, disconnect your internet from this PC, as well as the USB cable, and restart the PC..
-- Start the installation of what you just downloaded... and connect the USB cable when the system prompts you... and let it proceed until the end.
Restart the PC and try printing and scanning...?
Then, you can reconnect your internet..
There you go... you should try this and thank Brucine
it's in:
"Full installation software and driver / basic - Supports only printing and scanning features (2)"
Here is the link for the 4100 while the previous one was for the 4100e, I don't know the difference.
When you log in to HP for a 4120e model and search for support, you are redirected to the 4100 drivers, so I suppose they are the same.
In support of my comment in <12>, the Easy Start driver "connection required" weighs
16 Mb while the "offline" one weighs 195: the latter is complete where the former is just a sort of shortcut that will download the rest from HP as we also observe for many software programs.

OK, that's already good news.. So it's HP smart that's causing the trouble.
-- a) it might be possible to use "Epson Scan" https://download4.epson.biz/sec_pubs/tips/Tips_Printer_2/fr/GUID-0FED8AF9-DA44-4BF4-B94A-3E28F6467EED.htm
-- b) you can also use a photo program to start your scan...
For example, "Paint" allows this and also "Faston view", you need to check the menu under File... and you'll find a line that suggests scanning.
It works too.
Hello,
I've noticed here or elsewhere, I no longer know what I'm doing, I have an old Epson multifunction printer, Epson Scan hasn't been updated in ages and refuses most of its services under Windows 11.
However, as I mentioned earlier, HP Scan and Capture works quite well everywhere (including on the old Epson) and with a feature that is often missing in a number of applications, including the default one under Windows, the addition of pages.
