Selection issues for copy/paste

Hello,
For the past few days, I've been experiencing significant difficulties selecting items (text/images) to copy and paste, and even when I manage to do so, the selection cancels at the moment of pasting.
I have cleared the clipboard, with no improvement.
Enabling the "click lock" on the mouse seems to potentially solve my problem. It allows me to select words or paragraphs (by clicking once or twice).
However, to select parts of words/text or groups of (long) texts and images (by dragging the mouse while holding down), I need to click on the "selected" area to finalize the selection: I'm having a hard time controlling this double action.
It seems to me that before encountering this selection problem, I did it effortlessly by clicking (left) at the beginning and dragging the pointer over the area (whole or part) to be selected!
Please tell me exactly what is going on and, if possible, how to revert to the way it used to be or even better...

Hello,
It is possible that opening files by double-clicking is disabled.
Open the File Explorer.
In the toolbar at the top of the screen, click on the 3 small dots (See more...), then on Options
Select Open items with a single click and confirm by clicking on OK.
Thank you for your quick response that I tried to put into practice.
In fact, the only modification I had to apply to my settings was to check "Underline the titles of icons...".
Unfortunately, my selection problem has not been solved... and I don't know what the impact (more or less interesting?!) of my change will be.
Excuse me, I had been too eager to test and perhaps I forgot to confirm.
By clicking on OK, everything seems to work, even though I don't see what the effect of underlining the titles of the icons has to do with it!
Thank you.
Several ideas at random:
If you have a touchpad, is it functioning normally? Are you able to make selections?
Try changing the mouse pad or the surface on which the mouse is moving. Sometimes, the functioning can be disrupted by the color of the surface.
Have you tried unplugging and plugging the mouse back in?
In the same vein, go to Device Manager (right-click on Start) and uninstall the mouse driver. The driver will be reinstalled when you plug the mouse back in or restart the computer.
