Xiaomi/Redmi - network issues and location SMS

Hello,

For your information, my question has nothing to do with hacking. It concerns official ROMs available on the Xiaomi manufacturer's website, as well as the flashing methods.

During my last trip to China, I bought a Redmi Note 12 Turbo smartphone with the original (Chinese) ROM from an official Xiaomi store. Since I wasn't going to stay there long, I asked the manager if there was a possibility to flash it with an official global version to have the French language. The manager confirmed this and flashed it with the MIUI Global 14.0.8.0 (TMRMIXM) version. I was able to try my SIM cards on site, and the phone successfully detected them, and I was even able to send requests to receive verification SMS from the operator.

The problem is that when I returned, the phone's behavior completely changed:

  • The SIMs are detected but frequently disconnect from the network for no apparent reason most of the time.
  • When I make or receive calls, the SIMs disconnect as well. Sometimes during the call which interrupts the conversation, sometimes at the end of the call.
  • The same goes for SMS that do not arrive to their recipients. I have to restart the phone for them to go through.
  • I get the error message: couldnt activate SMS positioning on SIM 1 (or SIM2).

I have scoured many forums including the official manufacturer's one, and unfortunately, it turns out that this is a common problem with this brand (Xiaomi/Redmi).

From what I have gathered: since there is strict population control in China, and when you are a new buyer of a Chinese smartphone from this brand, you are required to authenticate your SIM by allowing the server to send you an SMS for positioning. In China, this goes smoothly. Outside of China, there is a serious issue since the positioning SMS required by the brand's server do not go through at all.

Not being able to resolve this issue, I would like to revert to the original flash by installing a Chinese ROM, but I haven't managed to do it in Recovery mode (the easy method). The software used in Fastboot mode doesn't work either, as they are either too old and haven't been updated, or they return errors (like dll errors for example). Or maybe I missed something along the way.

Are there any flashing specialists who can help me, please? Thank you.
