CPU not detected by the motherboard

Hello,

I just built my first PC by myself and without any help (maybe I shouldn't have!).

It includes:

- Motherboard: MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK WIFI

- CPU: I7 14700 KF

- Graphics card: PNY GEFORCE RTX 4070 TI 12 GB

- DDR 5 VENGENCE 32 GB

- PSU: FOX SPIRIT HG 850W

- 1 SSD of 1 TB

- 1 SSD of 2 TB.

I think (I'm not immune to having made a mistake) that I've connected everything properly, but after checking, I notice, from the LEDs indicating the debugging status of the motherboard, that the light is red (CPU not detected or initialization failure).

I've been searching for over a day to find out what might be wrong.

Not being able to find it, I'm reaching out to ask for your help.

I'm at your disposal.

Thank you

Hello

There are specific power cables for the CPU on the motherboard, is it properly connected?

Post pictures of the inside of your case.

Hello.

Either you haven't installed the CPU correctly.

Or the BIOS is not up to date and therefore does not recognize the CPU; to update the BIOS see this page.

From a distance, without having the PC in hand, it's difficult to tell you more.

Hi,

it doesn't change anything.

In any case, the monitor's screen remains black.

Reseat the CPU and start again.

Hello again,

I took everything apart again and it doesn't change anything.

Still this red light (CPU not detected or initialization error).

I'm starting to wonder if I was right to want to put it together by myself!

It's true that for a first PC, this configuration is a bit too complex.

That said, the motherboard is not natively compatible with this processor; if the BIOS version is earlier than the version required for a 14700KF, it won't work. When and where did you buy this motherboard?

On this model, you can flash the BIOS without the processor installed specifically to address this kind of problem. There is a dedicated USB port and a button. You need to read the explanation in the manual. You must IMPERATIVELY follow the process; no improvisation is allowed.

What troubles me is that the huge CPU cooler you've installed hides the entire motherboard. If this is your first build, it would be very surprising if you haven't forgotten a connector somewhere, but we can't see anything because of the cooler..... I do see that you have plugged in both 8-pin CPU power connectors, using both is unnecessary, try with just one.

When you took it apart, you should have taken pictures.

Everything was bought last week (a Christmas gift to myself).

After that, I can start again and take photos at each step if it's to make it work.

But it might take a while?

Or should I remove the heatsink so the connectors are visible?

I've already tried that before disassembling. I still see that you connected both 8-pin power connectors for the CPU; using both is unnecessary, try with just one.

For all practical purposes, here it is without the cooler.

I unplugged one of the two power connectors. It still runs, but no changes.

You left power 2 plugged in, try power 1 instead. On the power supply, did you take the right connector for the CPU? Not the ones labeled "pcie"?

If it's still not okay, try flashing the BIOS using the method without the processor.

I have connected it as suggested to connector 1.

So, the LED turned orange but, barely 5 seconds later, it shut off.

Is there a tutorial to flash the BIOS? I admit that I'm starting to see my limits here.

Ok, so it reacts differently... I hope it's not your power supply that's the problem...

Are you sure about the cables coming from the power supply for power 1 and 2?? I've seen cases where there was a mix-up with 8-pin connectors meant for graphics cards, this one is a strict 8-pin or split into 2x4.

Is there a tutorial for flashing the BIOS?

You should definitely not follow a tutorial, it's explained in the motherboard manual, it's specific to each model, no improvisation, you have to follow it rigorously.

After that, if it’s still the same, you should consult a technician who has the equipment to test and check everything....

The power supply is new too and it's 2x4.

And, ok I understand that we definitely shouldn't follow any tutorials.
