Hello,
I want to upload an .mp4 video from my phone to my PC. I only have sound and no image, and a message appears saying "we couldn't open my photo.mp4, please wait a moment." I’m being asked to get a new codec and install a paid HEVC extension to play the videos?.

Thank you for your help.

Sincerely

    Hello,
    Thank you for the response.
But why now, "?" when for years there was no need for that, and besides, it's not systematic (sometimes it goes through, and sometimes it doesn't, ???

It has always been; it is sufficient for the media in question to contain a HEVC/HEIC Codec, which is not always the case, and which is owned by Apple hence the rights.

    Hello,

I'm getting back to the subject of "why now," because these are family videos made with the same phone for at least two years, and viewed on the same PC for 10 years, I don't see why that's changing,

Or maybe it's the updates (which are done, not to improve, but to destabilize).

      Hello,

Formally, I don't know; unless you install a free or paid extension. Regarding updates, it has been reported that Windows 10 hasn't included the HEVC decoder since 1709 (so since 2017).
      https://www.magix.info/fr/assistance-technique/article/le-format-hevc-n-est-plus-disponible-aprs-une-mise--jour-de-windows--471/

It is possible that if your PC is old and has been continuously updated since before 1709, this decoder may have been historically installed and then indeed uninstalled during an update; once again, it's officially not about "destabilizing" but conforming to commercial rights.

Where do these videos come from, iPhone, camcorder?

If we don't want to bypass as mentioned, pay the 99 cents, or read for free with VLC (I don't know why, I assume the publisher must have made an agreement with Apple), we can always try converting to H264. There are several online proposals or through software, I haven't tested any, the first link that comes up randomly:

The first link takes me to the Microsoft store?
It says that it doesn't work on my PC?

I don't have an HEVC file to test.

The link in <1> suggests downloading VLC (with a link, but it's available from the publisher) or a link on the Microsoft Store, which I haven't tested.
The first one in <6> also suggests through another means the US Microsoft Store where it would be free: the link takes a while to load but eventually displays, but I don't see why it wouldn't work if you have access to the Microsoft Store or search for "HEVC Video Extension" there.
The downside is, of course, that in all cases the processor and graphics card must support HEVC.

The second link in <6> promotes a first software by telling us that it converts HEVC videos into as many images, whereas its description states the opposite (H264, that's not a photo), I haven't tested it:
      https://imazing.com/fr/converter

It mentions as an alternative online conversion or using another software, Handbrake (I don't know if in the same category, Avidemux, which I use and is user-friendly, can handle HEVC/H265 input, MKV/H264 output is no problem):

Hi, by the way, I have a Motorola phone and on my video function, there's a text suggesting I use HEVC (H 265), which is more efficient for compression to shoot in UHD (4k), but there's also a warning that "some platforms do not support it, so...!!!!!..

My opinion is to stick with AVC H264.
