No reception of German channels via satellite

Hello,

I am looking for help to set up my installation.

Living in Alsace and married to a German woman, it is only natural that I want to receive German channels.

Unfortunately, while I do receive English and other channels (over 670 channels and radio stations), I receive nothing from Germany.

My installation:

A satellite dish of about 90 cm made of aluminum. (SCHWAIGER 258 Satellite dish Antenna in Aluminum Offset Antenna Arm LNB Mounting Bracket Satellite dish 88 x 88 cm Anthracite: Amazon.fr: High-Tech)
A TCL television (4K QLED TV 65 Inches - 144Hz - Television - C735 - TCL France)

A Gaycer Quad LNB (Goaycer Quad LNB 4 participants Black Superior Quality [Excellent Test] Multi-feed compatible with weather protection Gold-plated contacts 4 compartments Full HD, 4K, 3D: Amazon.fr: High-Tech)

With this configuration, I do receive very well the English channels and others.

After a call to the customer service of my receiver (Boulanger), the technician concluded that the problem might be:

- The television software

- A signal that is too weak entering my TV tuner, which might need to be amplified.

- The wiring of my installation

To validate the first theory and eliminate the other two issues (installation + too weak signal on the TV), I went to get a decoder directly from Germany, already preconfigured (basically, plug-and-play).

Buy Schwaiger Full HD satellite receiver with USB connection at OBI

Unfortunately, I receive nothing with this decoder as well (not even the English channels, since the purchased decoder is not configured for that!).

I think it might be a signal amplitude problem, due to the length of the cables, so I positioned my TV as close to my satellite dish as possible and connected a coaxial cable of about 3 meters.

Still no result.

In doing this, I have indirectly addressed the third problem by simplifying my installation as much as possible (TV directly connected to the satellite dish).

I cannot guarantee the orientation of my satellite dish. Nevertheless, I used the "Satellite Installation" app from SES S.A. and I am quite confident in my setup.

Could you please indicate where my mistakes might be / the reasons for my problem?

Thank you in advance

Hello Ribalex,

On which satellite are your German programs broadcast?
Not all European channels are broadcast on one single satellite.

For example, I wanted to receive the Spanish channels, well they are broadcast on Hispasat (at 30 degrees West: Hispasat 1D and 1E) in right circular polarization (different from horizontal, vertical, left circular, and finally right circular polarizations).

Two items found on Wikipedia:

► Sat. 1 Deutschland

  • Languages: German.
  • Orbital Position: 19.2°E.
  • Satellite: Astra 1N.
  • Country of transmission: Germany.

► Which Astra satellite for German channels?

Satellite: Astra 1L. Transponder: 39. Frequency: 11052.75 MHz, Polarization: Horizontal.

I imagine you have a problem like that (it's been a long time since I've had a satellite).

Best wishes for this new year 2024!

I notice that I did not specify it in my post.

I believe I’m pointing to the Astra 19.2 satellite. The one that broadcasts German channels.

Because that's what my app shows me and I know it's the one needed for the German channels.

That said, it is true that I receive the English channels which are available on Astra 28.2 ...

https://www.satexpat.com/pays/uk/bbc/ <- ASTRA 28.2

https://www.satexpat.com/pays/allemagne/ <-ASTRA 19.2

But then how do I find this 19.2 satellite and not 28.2, if even the app doesn’t seem to guide me to the correct satellite?
Could the LNB head be responsible?

Hello,

"Can the LNB head be responsible?": no!
Back then, I was searching for satellites manually, turning, raising, lowering, all while watching my TV placed on the window. Talk about a job!

There are measuring instruments for that, but let me stop you right there.

With a single dish, pointed at one satellite, you won't get the second one unless they are close, which seems to be the case here.
In that case, you can install a second LNB head.

That was my situation back in the day, two heads on one arm.

But I don't want Astra 28.2
It's just that apparently that's the one I'm picking up, despite my settings intended to point to Astra 19.2.

How to "Avoid" Astra 28.2 and only "catch" Astra 19.2?

(thank you for your two previous answers)

Ah! I didn't understand that! Sorry!

Well, you need to point the satellite dish towards Astra 19.2.

"despite my settings intended to point towards Astra 19.2.": what are you using to adjust this orientation?
I hope not with software!
You need to physically adjust your dish, not with an app or other nonsense.... which, in addition, is not motorized (your dish).
If it's on a pole or the roof, you have to do it by hand, not with software.

I think you will need to bring in a "antenna technician" who will have the necessary equipment to properly orient the satellite dish towards Astra 19.2!
You won't be able to do it on your own!

I am watching Freesat https://www.freesat.co.uk/tv-guide and it is on Astra 28.2 E

Between the two satellites Astra1 and Astra 2, there is too much difference to have just one dish with two LNBs.

The solution is to have a dish with a motor to turn it.
But you might have a reception problem in Alsace because the coverage beam struggles to reach the east of France for the UK band.. unless you set up a 1.50m dish and there aren’t too many clouds..!

I finally managed to get the German channels.

My satellite dish was misaligned. More precisely, my LNB feedhorn. I hadn't respected the tilt of -2°. (I must have been at about +10° roughly).

Thank you for all the responses I received.

Well you see! You need to aim the satellite dish towards the transmitting satellite!
I'm marking this as resolved.
Regards!
