HP Laser Color MFP 179 fnw Printing Issue

Hello

I have an HP Color Laser MFP 179 fnw since September 2021. For the past few days, printing from my Mac has shown blurry grey shadows that repeat the text in the middle of the page.

I cleaned the toner collection bin as advised, but it didn't help.

My toner cartridges are well filled.

Unable to contact HP support.

Who might have an idea of the cause?

Thank you

Hello,

try to make a photocopy without using your computer, but only the buttons on this printer; to see if the defect remains the same..?? or not..??

- I suppose you will have the same issue...the drum makes two turns to print one page...it gets erased after the first turn to be reloaded with the second half of the page...In my opinion, it's this erasure that isn't working.

This function is carried out by applying high voltage to the "Corona" wires at the edge of the drum... These wires are thin and delicate, one of the wires may be broken...or clogged with toner powder that has stuck to it...

Or the high voltage generator is no longer working...

Here is a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMlCkI3ZWjs

that shows this problem on a "Brother," so you can see what a corona wire is, its location in relation to the drum... and the small slider that allows for cleaning... There may be the same device on yours..

So, check those points first...

Hello and thank you for your response.

Even if I make a photocopy from the printer without a computer, I have the same problem.

The link to the video doesn't work.

Regarding what you mentioned, does it mean it needs to be repaired? (which I assume will cost as much as the printer)

Thank you

Here is the page that shows pretty much the same thing without video.

My previous link was removed today... What a bummer...

So your photocopy confirms that the problem is with the printer, as I indicated...

For the intervention, it all depends on whether you are a bit technical and handy, good with your hands...?? or the exact opposite, in which case a real technician will be needed...

It's true that an hour of service is already close to €100... however, you can already list what exists in your area and contact one or two to get an estimate or quote... and decide afterwards...

It is possible that replacing the "Imaging Drum" will solve the problem... because often the corona wire is integrated in this assembly... I don't know this model precisely.

Maybe the help of a "good buddy" would be beneficial..??

This printer is €370 on Amazon and the W1132A Drum Replacement for HP is €184

A generic one is around €80

A temporary solution would be to buy an inkjet printer for €50

Thank you for all this very interesting information. I just explored the configuration page of my printer and I see that I have only made 1589 color + B&W prints.

I saw that the color laser drums are only replaced after 9000 prints. How is it possible that I now need to replace it?

On the configuration page, it mentions: Remaining imaging unit: 80%. Is this about the drum?

OK, I understand well... but all of this, you hadn’t mentioned before... how could I have guessed..?

In any case, I don’t know if it’s the original drum and toner...? and what model is currently in use..? Because not all of them have the same number of prints.. personally, I buy 3000.

It’s also worth checking if this printer is under warranty..? Often it’s two years... There might be a request to make to HP for action...

As for the imaging unit, I didn’t say it was normal, nor that it needed to be changed...

I only suggested that it might solve your issue of double printed pages...

That said, on other laser printers, cleaning the corona wire is part of normal maintenance by the user... So you should dig a little deeper into the subject and consider a bit of manual work ...

Yes, it is indeed the original toner and drum.

I will try (but I’m not really sure how) to write to HP to inform them.

Thank you very much anyway, our exchanges have really clarified things for me.

Hello,

I have the same model of printer and the same issue of repeating image prints on the page. Have you managed to resolve the problem please?

I just watched the video... it works.

It's probably your browser that is refusing it..?

But, I maintain that this type of story is quite common.. Even if the printers are different, the basic principle remains the same..
