Gmail configuration issue on Thunderbird

Hello,

I am unsuccessfully trying to configure a Gmail address on Thunderbird 102.

After an initial attempt with the account password, Thunderbird got stuck on password validation. When canceling the action, it responded that the incoming mail server already exists.

Having read elsewhere that Google requires strong authentication, I uninstalled Thunderbird, deleted its data files, and then reinstalled Thunderbird. I tried to configure the Gmail address again with OAuth2.0 authentication.

I received the message "Mozilla Thunderbird Email now has access to your Google account," but once again Thunderbird is stuck on password validation.

I don’t know how to get out of this.

Thank you for providing me with clear instructions to follow.

It worked.

I hesitated in Thunderbird to choose password authentication (since I entered the application password on the previous page) or OAuth, I chose OAuth.

I hope to achieve the same result with Outlook.

My goal is to transfer the emails sent from Windows Live Mail in .eml format through Gmail into Outlook.

This allows me to take the first step.

Thank you very much, Barnabé.

Hello,

Regarding your Gmail account, you should first check if you have enabled two-step verification.

If it is enabled, you cannot use your Gmail password to log in; you need to create and use an app password.

Thank you Barnabé for your response.

Does OAuth2.0 authentication require creating an app password?

I received the message that Thunderbird was accessing my Google account.

Is there anything particular to do if OAuth is selected in the authentication options, or do we need to enforce two-step verification anyway, and if so, how do we do that?

Thank you in advance for your answers. Perhaps there is a video explaining the procedure.

Hello,

Have you enabled IMAP (or POP) access to Gmail?

  • Open Gmail from the Google search engine.
  • Then click on Settings and then See all settings
  • Click on the Forwarding and POP/IMAP tab

Furthermore, there is no need for app passwords.

The settings I use (IMAP protocol and two-factor authentication enabled):

Thank you Pierre for your response.

Admit that one can get lost in all these configurations.

I managed with the help of Barnabé to connect from Thunderbird.

And I even succeeded, for those who are interested, in transferring .eml messages created by Windows Live Mail and stored on disk to Outlook.

Below is the link that guided me, but I couldn't figure out the Gmail permissions:

Thanks again and have a good evening.
