How to stop Google Photos synchronization

Hello everyone!

I installed Google Photos and activated synchronization. Very quickly, I found myself with full storage space!

Wanting to backtrack, I turned off the backup and was considering deleting all the "Google Photos" to free up space again because I have no intention of paying for a subscription to get more space.

However, I notice that whenever I delete a photo from Google Photos, it also disappears from the photo gallery on my phone! Is this normal, given that I thought I had "unsynced" Google Photos from the gallery by disabling the backup?

How can I fix this to clean up without losing everything?

A big thank you for your help!

Thank you for your response. Yes, indeed that's what I did, and by following these instructions I disabled the automatic backup, yet the deletions on Google Photos continue to reflect on the photo gallery of my phone, which I don't understand.

If you have checked everything well (read), then I am afraid I cannot help you, and unless you uninstall/deactivate the application and reinstall it a bit later, in case it is a bug, I don't see much of a solution.
We can reach out to Google support, but it is not easy, and like with everything that is free, it takes a long time to receive any potential answers.

Sometimes it also requires a delay before certain settings actually apply, but not if it has been several days.

Ps: if you delete the app, make sure to back up your photos 'just in case' using your phone and certain applications, or via the Photo website which allows exports in the form of a Zip file.

Note that if you are at capacity, it means that your phone is too, and apart from cleaning up images or backing them up somewhere, you have no solution and especially no security.
Read here the numerous posts from people who have "lost everything" due to a mobile crash, a critical bug, a malfunctioning SD card, etc. (because they didn't want to pay either)
When they arrive here, it's too late, the loss is permanent because there is no solution.
It is worth considering this factor.

Thank you for taking the time to respond and for your advice. Indeed, I will wait a few days to see if it desynchronizes, and if not, I will back up to an external hard drive and delete the app. Have a good evening.
