Hello

To use an application, I need to install VMware Workstation Pro (the version in the package is 16.2.0) my PC is running Windows 11 Aspire 7745G 12GB RAM 1.73GHz, OK I installed and ran it. But I am encountering a problem when I execute the function "Power on this virtual machine" the error is "VMX unrestricted Guest"

I don't know what to do! I tried to install version 12 without success, maybe my PC is too old?

Does anyone have a solution or ideas to help me, I don't know very well how virtual machines work

Thank you for your answers

Error text:

Good evening, to use VMware Workstation your processor must have the "VMX unrestricted Guest" functionality.

It's quite possible that yours doesn't have it, and therefore it's impossible for you to create or manage virtual machines with VMware.

If you have to use VMware for your application, you should consider upgrading your processor so that it supports virtualization in guest mode, but that will be quite expensive.

Otherwise, try to see if there is a possibility of running your application via VirtualBox or Hyper-V (if the same error doesn't occur).

    Keep me updated.

      Hello,

The information provided does not include the relevant detail: the processor model.

The PC isn't that old if it runs Windows 11, despite having a low processor frequency.

However, I run Workstation Pro 16.2.4 without any problems on a rather weak and dated processor, but under Windows 10: Workstation prompts me at launch to upgrade to version 17, supposedly because it would "fully" support Windows 11, so it might be worth testing.

There is a workaround mentioned that could bypass the issue which I haven't tested, involving editing the config.ini file at
C:\ProgramData\VMware\VMware Workstation and adding the line:

      monitor.allowLegacyCPU = "true"

Hello, Thank you for your response

I added the line in the config.ini file, it does allow VMware to launch, it's quite slow, I am able to bring up a menu where the icons are displayed to activate the software.

But I am encountering a licensing problem despite having it, according to the installation guide after clicking on "Power on this virtual machine" a window should appear where we need to choose "I Moved It" ??? but it doesn't show up?

I will try to understand why and maybe attempt the solution from the second response I received by trying with VirtualBox

    Thank you Best regards

      Hello,

I have never entered the Windows license in VMWare and it has never been asked of me, but during the installation of the software, it was as if it hadn't been installed in a virtual machine.

    Hello, Continuing my work

I installed VirtualBox to try it out, but I don't know how to activate my software by creating a new machine. On VMware, I activate the application by creating a virtual machine and selecting a .vmx file.

How do you do it on VirtualBox? Is it possible?

    Thank you for your responses

    Best regards

    Hello Brucine

I'm not talking about the Windows license but the one for the software I purchased.

When I launch VMware after clicking "Power on this virtual machine," VMware starts (Starting... quite a long time...) then "Start Windows normally..." A window appears with the icons of my software, and after that I don't have the continuation of the installation according to the installation manual.

I think this is no longer a VMware issue!

But with Windows after VMware, it tells me that my Windows has expired, and whether I want to continue or abandon, without doing anything it launches the software window.

I am using VMware Workstation PRO 16 Hardware compatibility 15.x included in the purchased package.

How can I find out which version of Windows should be used? There might be a compatibility issue?

    Best regards

Workstation Pro is a paid version (which does not bring anything to the average user), I have 16 Pro 16.2.4, but it doesn’t matter: if not purchased, Workstation Pro will also request its license by itself; the problem does not exist with Workstation Player 15 and above which are free, and the latest versions (16) are compatible with Windows 10 and 11. Version 17 Pro (to which 16 Pro migrates for free upon request) is said to be fully compatible with Windows 11, while versions 16 only mention a bug related to Windows 11 under certain conditions (and thus its use) starting from 16.2.5

However, Windows 11 also has requirements regarding TPM in VMWare:

A virtual machine does not grant the right to use a license that is already used physically on the same machine or elsewhere, so Windows will logically complain as long as dedicated license proof is not provided.

If it’s the purchased Workstation license that is causing issues, contact support; other software behaves exactly like Windows and like in a physical situation in requiring its own license.
