In response to Quentin2121, these are .ISO and .MPG files that are played perfectly with VLC v.3.0.16 on the internal hard drive of the PC.

The external drive on which I want to back up the contents of a PC disk, the .ISO files are the image files of a DVD or Blu-ray created to be burned. As for the MPG files, they were created between 1997 and 2006, which represents a significant number. I've been doing video editing for 30 years.

This does not explain why all the files are read well on another 4TB external drive and not on the new one I just bought.

On this drive, I've created 2 directories, one of which has subdirectories. The files copied into the subdirectories are there, but the next day, they disappeared. Those copied into the main directory are still present, but cannot be read.

I ran "chkdsk" but it's still the same.

Here is an image of the copy from drive O to drive J. On drive J, the file is recognized with the VLC icon and is not readable, but on drive O it is visible and readable.

So copy the data and repeatedly erase the old ones.

beware back up this data beforehand and if the disk really has a large capacity, the test will be very, very long. (and make sure to select the correct disk to test, don't make a mistake or you risk erasing another one)
