My RAM doesn't work in certain slots.

Hello,

I have a problem. I wanted to add RAM to my PC, DDR4 3200 MHz 4x8G, but when I go into the BIOS and set the frequency of my RAM to 3200 MHz, the PC displays a black screen and the CPU LED lights up. When I remove the two added sticks, it works again. I tried putting the two new sticks in dual channel on the first slots, and they are detected and work at 3200 MHz. However, as soon as I put one stick in the other slots, I get a black screen whenever I set them to 3200 MHz, but they work at 2133 MHz. Please help me ????????

    Hello

The motherboard is an MSI B450, the BIOS has been updated due to the problem. The RAM modules are Corsair Vengeance Pro RGB, and when I put in two 3200 MHz modules that work well, the processor is a Ryzen 5 2600X.

    Questions :

1/ Can you use 4 memory modules?

    Answer :

. What is the model of your memory modules (e.g.: for a Corsair = CMK32GX4M4B3200C16W)?

. Depending on the model, it is very likely that it is not compatible, which would result in a black screen at startup:

    https://fr.msi.com/Motherboard/B450-TOMAHAWK/support#mem

2/ Does the CPU LED indicator light up when you install two memory modules?

. If not, it is due to the two memory modules supported in the two slots for compatibility.

3/ If you want to use 32GB of memory modules, use another model of compatible Corsair memory modules according to the list provided for your motherboard (1/) (e.g.: 2x16GB (cheaper than 4x8GB)).

4/ After installation, the memory modules operate at normal speed (SPD speed) 2133MHz, and to reach a maximum speed (Support speed) 3200MHz, simply enable XMP either via the MSI application or the BIOS.

    Hello

I have looked closely and my RAM sticks are indeed compatible with the motherboard; it works very well when there are only two with XMP enabled. However, when I put them in the black slots of my motherboard, it doesn't work with any RAM stick and only runs at 2133 MHz. I have checked, and my motherboard can support up to 4000 MHz on all four slots. I think it's a configuration issue in the BIOS, but I’m not sure because I installed the latest BIOS version. So right now, I’m using my four sticks to make 32 GB, but at 2133 MHz.

    Hello

. To start with, is your motherboard a MSI B450 Tomahawk?

. When I talk to you about compatibility, it’s to show you that depending on the reference of the memory sticks (e.g.: CMK32GX4M4B3200C16W) you will or will not be able to install two or four memory sticks.

. It’s normal that your Corsair memory sticks work at 2133Mhz (SPD Speed), but now if you want a memory speed in normal mode (SPD Test) 3200Mhz, check the list of compatible memories with your motherboard, section SPD Speed / Supported speed / 1|2|4 DIMM:

    e.g.: Corsair CMN32GX4M2Z3200C16 - DDR4 - 3200MHz - 3200 MHz - ... - 1.35v - SINGLE - 16GB - √ | √ |

This model of memory sticks Corsair is compatible only with two slots on the motherboard.

. If your motherboard is a MSI B450 Tomahawk it supports up to 3466Mhz but this will depend on the model of processor installed (e.g.: ryzen 5 2600x = Up to 2933Mhz https://www.amd.com/fr/products/cpu/amd-ryzen-5-2600x).

Hello, my motherboard is not a MSI B450 Tomahawk, it's a MSI B450 Gaming Plus.

And I checked, it should be compatible, but I don't understand because when I put three RAM sticks at 3200MHz, it works perfectly, and when I put one stick specifically in one slot, it doesn't work anymore, even when I put a single 3200MHz stick in that specific slot.

    Hello

Even though it's an MSI B450 gaming plus, the Corsair memory stick is the same and compatible in two slots at 3200Mhz by default (SPD Speed). Just like the processor, it is preferable to stick with your model of Corsair memory sticks at 2133Mhz (SPD Speed) and compatible with two slots:

    https://www.amazon.fr/Corsair-Vengeance-%C3%89clairage-Dynamique-Compatible/dp/B09C5VB5XM/ref=sr_1_2?__mk_fr_FR=%C3%85M%C3%85%C5%BD%C3%95%C3%91&crid=156CSUXV6TMAH&keywords=CMN32GX4M2Z3200C16&qid=1666277442&qu=eyJxc2MiOiIwLjY0IiwicXNhIjoiMC4wMCIsInFzcCI6IjAuMDAifQ%3D%3D&sprefix=cmn32gx4m2z3200c16%2B%2Caps%2C74&sr=8-2&th=1

For my part, I have never looked at compatible memory stick models; before purchasing, I would check in the product description if it was compatible with the motherboard's chipset. I have never had a problem since I only use the two slots.

    Hello

The motherboard is not the only thing to consider; the CPU integrates the memory controller, and your Ryzen 5 2600 does not support RAM at 3200 MHz.

      Good evening

Yet after looking closely at the XMP mode which gives my memory its maximum potential, when I put in 2 sticks my CPU takes 3200MHz and can handle 3 sticks as well. However, I repeat that even when I put 1 or 2 sticks in the RAM slots 3, 3200MHz doesn't work, so I suppose there isn't a compatibility issue or a memory management problem for the CPU but a defect on the motherboard. Thank you and have a good evening.
