GPX VIEWER: What is the consumption on Android?

Hello,

Until now, I have only used this app to view the maps I imported before going hiking.

I'm finally deciding to find a mobile plan that covers this activity, 3/4 hours a week. Indeed, I will be walking on the cliffs of Côte d'Armor and I would like to use the app's GPS while I walk... alone.

The problem is, I don't know what I need... how much data does it consume? My provider offers me 80 GB for €9.90. Will that be enough? Is that too much? I have only used the internet at home via Wi-Fi until now...

If a little expert is passing by, I'm counting on him to give me some information.

Thank you very much ;-)

    Hello,

As you indicated, GPX Viewer is intended for viewing already recorded tracks.

    1) To record tracks, I use Geo Tracker

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ilyabogdanovich.geotracker&hl=fr&gl=US

It works well. It is based on the old Google My Tracks app.

    2) I also tried Visorando

    https://play.google.com/store/search?q=visorando&c=apps&hl=fr&c=apps

This app allows you to record tracks and also follow already recorded routes.
I abandoned it because I experienced some issues: loss of GPS signal, especially in the forest, and the app crashing. I don’t know if it was my smartphone that was responsible; but I have never had this kind of problem with Geo Tracker. It is possible that the app has been improved. This would be desirable as the concept is very interesting.
    So: worth testing.

    3) GPS positioning does not use data. However, the app can download maps. So a few MB/hour according to this site:
    https://voyagesaloisir.blogspot.com/2020/12/combien-de-donnees-mobiles-vos.html

On the other hand, you should know that these apps consume a lot of energy; so do not keep the display on all the time and close the app immediately when the hike is over.

What is well conceived is clearly expressed,
And the words to say it come easily.

Thank you for your response, but it's the consumption that interests me. So I will leave my question pending...

I replied to you: a few MB per hour. With a package of 80 GB, you can go hiking for hundreds of kilometers!

So if I use it for 3/4 hour a week, how much data do I need per month?

At worst, Google Maps uses 10 MB/hour, so a maximum of 40 MB during my walk X 4.33 = 173 MB per month.

        It seems little to me....

One only needs to consider the possible downloading of maps.

The GPS itself uses the GPS chip included in the smartphone, which communicates directly with the geolocation satellites. Therefore, there is no data consumption.

    Hello

I use Visorando on my smartphone.
When I go hiking, it has a "cache" function, meaning it saves the map and the route track in memory. So there's no need to have an internet connection afterwards.
If the hike is long, I put the smartphone in airplane mode to avoid calls, notifications, and other battery drainers.

Visorando is free with the Open Street Map. For the IGN map, it's about €20/year.

I don't use Visiorando because I never manage to complete my routes and I have neither the topology of the path nor the expected time. And since there's no one to respond, I gave up. So I use Calculitinéraires where I have everything at once and then I export the GTC to GPS Viewer on mobile.

Now I'll repeat, I need to know the consumption of a GPS over 3/4 hour to know which plan to choose ;-)

On the site whose address I provided, you can read:

So at worst, 20 MB for 4 hours.

A small package of 5 GB is therefore more than enough for you.

I have no other references, and I have never asked myself the question since I have an unlimited plan.

The GPS consumes an average of 1.5 MB per hour, which isn't much. On the other hand, I don't know about your smartphone.
8 hours of hiking uses 50% of my battery.
Besides that, just be a bit cooler, it would be nice.

Fully agree on the quality of the exchange!

Especially since the question was not about GPX Viewer or hiking software and could be summarized as: "What plan do I need to hike with the GPS on my smartphone?"

My question is, because Free offers me a plan of 80 MB for €9.90 per month, it seems a lot to me, especially since I only use the internet at home via Wi-Fi.

Now I just read that this plan lasts 12 months and automatically switches to 5G that I don't have... no need.

    So I keep looking.
