Hello,
Yes, I have a small issue regarding these terms and also a technical issue with connecting these systems via different Android boxes to my digital amplifier. First, the one that works, which is an Android box with what I call a toslink port (square female socket) on my amplifier that has a similar socket, connected by an optical cable with 2 male square ends. The sound obtained is absolutely superb. Note that if the box is connected with the optical cable and the cable is not connected to my amplifier, a red light comes out of the cable.
In the second case, I have a new Android box with a port labeled spdif, which is this time a female jack type socket. I connected a cable that I refer to as spdif/toslink, equipped with a jack connector for the box and a square connector for my amplifier. The physical connection is done correctly, but there is no sound at all. If I do not connect the amplifier side, the cable does not emit any red light. On the Android box, I have not seen any settings related to audio outputs.
Is there anyone to enlighten my cable?
Thank you for your information and have a good afternoon.
Didier

Hello,
S/PDIF connectors (short for Sony/Philips Digital InterFace) come in two types:
- Toslink, which are optical connectors (using optical cable)
- Coaxial, which are RCA-type connectors (using a simple coaxial cable)
See https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/S/PDIF
If you want to connect a Coaxial output to an optical input, you need a Coaxial to optical converter.
Examples
A coaxial in to optical out

A multi-sensor

Very difficult to catch a black cat in a dark room.

Hello again and thank you for the quick response.
I might be starting to understand, and in fact, I believe I was misled by the fact that there are optical cables with a jack plug that fit perfectly into the jack port of my Android box, but therefore cannot carry an optical signal.
I might have a converter of this type somewhere in my clutter, but since I was convinced that the box emitted an optical signal, I didn't look for it.
I also have the option of going through the HDMI port and then using an audio extractor with a Toslink optical output to make the connection, but I'm not sure I'll get the same sound quality.
I'll keep going...
Have a nice afternoon.
Didier.

My amplifier is an already quite old Technics, equipped with 2 optical SPDIF inputs, which I use in my projection room equipped with 3 projectors. The sound coming from the optical inputs is simply fabulous. I will soon go down to do some new tests. I don’t have the model of the amplifier on hand, I will specify it when I return.
Well, first of all, my amplifier is a Technics Sa-Dx930.
So I went to my projection room to do some new tests, and indeed in my mess, I do have a bi-directional audio converter. It has one toslink input and output, and one female coaxial input and output with the corresponding male/male coaxial cable.... but here’s the problem, it is totally impossible to connect this cable to the spdif output of my new Android TV box. Here is the box I bought:
https://a.aliexpress.com/_mNOJ6e8
You can see the various outputs, including the spdif output.
On this output, I can connect this optical cable that seems to fit perfectly, but it appears that no signal comes through. Here is this cable:
https://a.aliexpress.com/_mrFst5e
Otherwise, in my video setup, I have a Chromecast connected to an audio extractor to pass through my amplifier and plugged into the second toslink input of my amplifier. I replaced it with my new box for testing. The sound is then correct, but no more than that. Nothing compared to the old box which has a real toslink output and is therefore directly connected to the other toslink input of my amplifier with an optical cable. A sound that I would describe as ambisonic.. Powerful, clear, with bass...
In summary, I still don't understand. The solution remains to buy another box with a toslink output; I've seen some, they are not too expensive, but I'd like to understand.
Good evening.

Of course, that’s what I immediately thought and looked at... But no, nothing at all, very poor menu, no possibility to define an audio output type. Something is escaping me. Yes, obviously it seems to be a "mini toslink" optical output from what I see while searching online. In fact, I will wait to receive the cable I indicated; the trial I did was with a cable I already had that may be defective. I also ordered a small "mini toslink" / "toslink" adapter. It exists. Otherwise, I'm at a loss. Well, I could also ask to return the box and order another one with an obviously compliant output for an optical cable like the one I have that works.
Nothing in the manual about this?
I haven't managed to find this kind of document online for now
Device in use, no red light in this jack socket?
There seems to be a conversation with SPDIF

Indeed, I can't find any more precise information about this release either.
To clarify, the cable I used was already connected to an older MX pro box related to a television. The cable wasn't connected to anything at the audio level, and just like when connecting with the new box, no red light was emitted. As I said, faulty cable? I hardly believe it, and I will soon have the answer with the arrival of the new cable and the small adapter. There must be an answer.
I have noted the importance of clicking on the links to support this site that I really appreciate, which I have known and used for many years.
I will continue to contribute to this discussion so that we can find an explanation.
One more thing: the reason I want to change the box used in my projection room, which still allows me to have this amazing digital sound, is that this older box only has 1GB of RAM and sometimes "lags" quite a bit when streaming videos. The new MX pro box has 8GB of RAM.
Have a good day.

Good evening...
Help yourself, and heaven will help you... My bad. Yes, I had looked at the "sound" settings of the box and I hadn't seen much other than the same things you find on a mobile: volume of different ringtones, mute and that's about it. Nothing for the actual sound management... except that (and yet I knew it), these boxes offer different accesses to different settings. So I found another access to the settings, and there the "sound" setting opens a page with many possibilities including words like "automatic," "manual," "surround," "spdif," "dts," with some opening another page of additional settings.
Well, I’m not at all a specialist, and besides there isn’t really a box indicating to activate the spdif output, but I randomly activated everything that could send the optical sound to the spdif output...
I tried it, and indeed I think I've found the "surround" sound that I had with the previous box. Maybe the stereo effects aren't the same? In any case, I don't fully master my amplifier, and I've never managed to connect and therefore to make the center speaker work, even when plugging it into the right outputs. I connected it in parallel to one of the rear speakers, but that's another problem.
I will continue to dig through this "sound" menu to better understand the settings.
Thank you again for the support and have a good evening.
Didier.

Good evening.
Well, I think I celebrated victory a bit too soon. Indeed, while I thought I had found my digital sound, the absence of stereo effect disappointed me, and since I have another Android TV box, this one equipped with a "normal" toslink output that doesn't require an optical cable with a jack plug, I connected and turned it on... Right away, I saw the red light at the end of the cable. The sound tests are conclusive: with the previous connection and the optical cable with jack plug, the signal didn’t pass, and the sound I had actually came through the HDMI and its analog output.
I also have another box from the same brand as the new one I just bought, which also has a "jack" spdif output, so I tried again. The sound menu of this other box is simpler and clearer; we need to check the "audio-hdmi" and "audio-spdif" outputs... But on this box, also of the same brand, no matter what we do with the settings, there is no optical sound, no red light at the end of the cable. I received a new cable, but nothing changed.
In summary, the cable with a jack plug never carries the signal. However, I have done numerous tests with the sound settings on both boxes.
It's hard to find information; I admit I don't understand anything. I may be making a mistake, but I don't see which one.
I realize that no one can see the issue from what I've written; I will continue to think.
Have a good evening.
Didier.

Hello,
Well, I continue to dig, and maybe I have a beginning of an answer on a forum, unfortunately in English which I only half understand, but many seem to be experiencing the same problem as me, no digital audio output.
Going down in the discussion, if I understand correctly, it seems to be said that the spdif output is not actually an optical output, but requires a different type of cable than a toslink cable.
For the bilinguals, here is the link:
https://www.avsforum.com/threads/mxq-pro-spdif-help-needed.2333441/
In fact, if I understood correctly, I need to try a different type of cable with an adapter to use this non-optical but digital spdif output. This would also explain why on my other mxq box, the same spdif output doesn’t work either.
I just found a jack/rca spdif cable, I already have a bidirectional digital/optical adapter, I ordered it.
Have a good evening.
