PDF printing issue on Macbook Air M1

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a Macbook Air M1.
As a musician, I use it for audio creation but also for score editing, notably via Guitar Pro 7.

Usually, I edit my scores on a PC, then store them on a USB stick before printing them on large office photocopiers.
But since I got this Mac, I've been having nothing but problems...

For my examples, I will use a file titled "L'Ogre de la Forêt Noire".
It is very basic and contains only one page. It is also available via a Dropbox link at the end of the thread.

I edit my score, export it to PDF from Guitar Pro 7 (set up with an A4 layout), store the file on my USB stick, and when I try to print, here is what I get:

- On a Thompson photocopier, I have two files; one titled: "_L'Ogre de la Forêt Noire". It's a file that contains only one line of text when printed, and I cannot open it from a PC.
The second is titled "L'Ogre de la Forêt Noire"; it is the correct file, but it throws an error on the photocopier as if the format were incorrect.

- On a Konica photocopier, the page prints but in an incorrect format. I don't have the file "_L'Ogre de la Forêt Noire" appearing. (See photo at the end of the post)

- On a home Canon printer (still via USB stick), I had the files but could not print them. The printer indicates that they are too large or incompatible (I've forgotten the exact message).

- When I drop the file from my Drive, retrieve it on my smartphone, copy the file from my smartphone using a USB C stick, and try to print, I encounter the same problem.

- When I perform the same operation but print directly from my Drive, on a Windows PC connected to all the photocopiers mentioned above, I can print my file without any issues in the correct format.

- However, some people have told me they couldn't open the files in question from a Windows PC.

This is all very problematic!!
It completely hinders my work, as currently I must use Google Drive + a Windows PC to print the PDF files from my Mac...

I haven't had time to test everything, but I know that I didn't have printing issues with a PDF file that came from the Pages application.
However, beyond Guitar Pro 7, I've had issues with files that hadn't been edited from my Mac (PDF files created on Windows, then stored on Google Drive, downloaded to the Mac, and then transferred to USB).

I've also noticed that there is a significant difference in size between a PDF exported on Windows and a PDF exported on Mac.

Windows: 31 KB
Mac: 152 KB

Here are the files:

- L'Ogre de la Forêt Noire PC (exported from PC): https://www.dropbox.com/s/a6mbfv3h8vdq8f7/L%27Ogre%20de%20la%20For%C3%AAt%20Noire%20PC.pdf?dl=0

- L'Ogre de la Forêt Noire Mac (exported from Mac): https://www.dropbox.com/s/lpeua4tikjf4ia6/L%27Ogre%20de%20la%20For%C3%AAt%20Noire%20Mac.pdf?dl=0

- A photo of the printing result with the Konica photocopier (which at least produces something unlike the others): https://www.dropbox.com/s/7eel2wapzv4vahj/Probl%C3%A8me%20PDF%20Mac.jpg?dl=0

Thank you in advance; I truly hope you will be able to help me!!!

Good evening,

for my part, when I download your PDF files from Mac or Windows, I get the same result, that is to say, a readable and identical PDF file, of which here is a screenshot:

But it is true that the file from Windows is 32 KB, while the file from Mac is 156 KB, but that can be explained by the PDF export settings on each computer.

If I download the file from your printer, no problem, I see this:

In short, I have no problem reading or printing these files.

EDIT: this on my Macbook Air M1 under Monterey

Thank you for your response!

Indeed, I am also able to read both PDF files whether on my Mac or the four other Windows PCs I have accessed.

The issue occurs during printing.
In the photo, it is clear that the PDF is not in the correct format at all; half of it is missing. Unlike your screenshot.

And still, this is the case for the only printer that managed to print something for me.

In order to successfully print the file, I need to do it from a Windows computer.

Do you have the possibility to attempt to print both files from your Mac?

Hello,

I just printed the 2 PDFs, from Mac and Windows, both prints come out absolutely perfect. With just a very slight difference in the height of the bottom pages between the Mac file and the Windows file... In both cases, the printing is perfect on my Canon TS 8151

Here is a scan of one of the prints

Good evening,

Thank you for your response.
On another forum, a user just replied to me the same thing after testing the opening of the file and printing. I don’t understand anything …

Basically, you are printing the file from your Mac that is either wired or network-connected to a home printer?

On my side, I create the PDF file on my Mac, copy it to a USB drive, and connect the USB drive directly to the printers in question.

The printers are unable to print the files from my USB drive when they are PDFs created on Mac.
No issues with the same USB drive and the same process, but with a Windows computer.
No issues either if I create the file on Mac, send it to a Windows PC, and copy it to the USB drive from the Windows PC.

For your information, my USB drive is formatted in FAT32.
Also, I do not have the ability to connect my Mac via wired or network connection to the printers concerned (it’s office equipment to which I have limited access).

My Mac is on 12.1, I reinstalled the system in December.
I did a manual search for updates and it found an update that I executed.

This week I will try to send you some photos.

Hello,

My printer communicates exclusively via WIFI (via Airplay).

It seems that the issue occurs on your end when the Mac sends the file to the USB drive.

If the printer accepts the NTFS format, I suggest installing Mounty NTFS (free) or Paragon NTFS (paid), to allow the Mac to write to a drive formatted as NTFS, and then test it..

Mounty NTFS:
https://mounty.app

Personally, on my MacBook Air M1, I use Mounty NTFS rather than Paragon NTFS because Paragon requires modifying the security level of the Mac to allow the installation of an extension. (This procedure is specific to Macs with M1 processors). What Mounty NTFS does not require. The only very slight constraint is that for Mounty, the mounting of NTFS volumes is not automatic; it must be requested from the menu bar, but it works perfectly and the process is instantaneous.

EDIT: my MacBook Air M1 is also running 12.1 (Monterey)

Hello,

I tried formatting in NTFS, but this format is not recognized by the Konica copier I had on hand today.

Moreover, I successfully installed Mounty NTFS, I managed to copy files from Mac to my NTFS drive, but these files were invisible on Windows. I must have missed something!
In any case, this unfortunately doesn't advance my problem even if it's still a cool tip to know!

However, I do believe I have found a starting explanation for the problem after various tests (different USB drive formats in FAT32, exFAT, and NTFS, different methods of exporting to PDF, etc)!

Basically, the problem is that Guitar Pro 7 doesn't create a PDF in the correct format for me even though I have set it to "A4" and I have no issues with the same software on Windows.

Here’s what I get in Windows when I want to print the PDF exported from my Guitar Pro 7 on macOS (see the "actual size" preview):

And here’s what I get with the same file but exported to PDF from the Windows version of Guitar Pro 7:

Of course, when printing from a PC or a Mac, our computers automatically adjust the format, but if the file is on a USB drive, the printer cannot adapt the format.

Here’s what I get when trying to print the PDF file from Mac on a Konica Minolta Bizhub C258 copier:

And if I force the print (something I can't do on a Thompson), here’s what I get:

The only solution I have found so far is to export my sheets by doing a print to a PDF save instead of using the native "export to PDF" function on Guitar Pro 7.
You also need to use a USB drive formatted in FAT32, but I suspected that!

Likewise, I will need to check if this works on the Thompson.

I tested printing documents from my USB drive on a Canon MB2150 home printer and nothing works, whether for Windows or Mac PDFs, here’s the error message:

But this is less serious, it’s a printer that I use little and at worst I can try to connect it via wired or Wifi with the drivers.

Hello,

The only solution I've found so far is to export my scores by printing to a PDF file instead of using the "export to PDF" feature.

That's exactly the solution I was about to suggest to you. Use the PDF button located at the bottom left corner of the print dialog window... If the resulting PDF file is correct, its printout should also be. The problem would therefore lie in the PDF export management of your music app..
