Opera Sync

Hello,

I am trying to synchronize the Opera bookmarks from 2 computers; my old computer and a new one I just bought. I hope to import my updated bookmarks into my new computer.

So I activated my Opera account on both computers and the bookmarks from 2019 from an old version of another computer have taken over on my new computer. There’s something not normal about that.

Is there a way to fix this issue?

Thank you

Cyril

Configuration: Windows / Opera 77.0.4054.277

    Hello
The Opéra sync is working well, though.
It’s possible that your old machine was not always connected to the account and therefore did not perform the update in the last days of use. This is why regular checks are necessary, applicable to everything and everyone...
You also have access to the sync content on your Opéra Account auth.opera.com.

Hello and thank you for your reply,

Is there a solution to recover and install my bookmarks on my new computer?

    Hello
    I didn't say that!! ;-)
But you also have access to a part of the Favorites (not passwords) from other machines on the same account by expanding the Favorites (Heart) in the left toolbar, and then Quick Access...

I'm not sure I understand your explanations. I'm on Windows, not on Macintosh, maybe that's why!
Should I put all my bookmarks in the favorites (heart) and then in quick access?

    Hello
    No, on Windows...
All the Favorites (bookmarks) are available for all machines on the Opera account.
The Speed Dials, which correspond to the Opera Homepage of your machines, are also accessible in the (Heart) bar of the current browser.

Opera's tendency to "keep" "old machines" allows you to see a lot of things and "MAYBE" recover favorites you think are lost.

Unfortunately, this "recovery" is done manually. It is impossible to Drag/Drop in the Opera Account window.

This is also why I prefer Firefox.

      Hello,

We can't, like I do on Firefox, export bookmarks to HTML, after which I incorporate the path into my daily planned backup?

That way, whether there's a mishap with sync or not, I'm sure to recover my joy that is local.

      Hello Brucine,

So if I understand correctly, it would be better for me to function with Firefox?

      Good evening,

I don't know, I don't use Opera: my argument is that Firefox has an option to save bookmarks in a native and uncompressed format (bookmarks.html).
Once I have the path to this file, I back it up every day to another disk: in case of disaster, I delete the active bookmarks, import the backup that I can even work on directly (html file).
At worst, I will have only lost the new bookmarks of the day.
I'm not saying that Firefox is better, to each their own, but it's preferable to implement this scheme if possible.

From what I understand, it's not possible with Opera.
My choice of Opera is due to the fact that it has a built-in VPN. Back then, I liked it and now I'm used to it :-) It's not easy to start over with another browser.

Firefox now also has a built-in VPN, but as you said, everyone has their habits.

Thank you. It’s clearer now. I will therefore try to find the "lost" bookmarks.

    Hello
It's true that if you like to "pimp" your browser, Firefox is THE browser with the largest library of plugins...
The sync options are cool and the fact that it is (like Opera) cross-platform makes it a good companion on Android...
    See you soon

No, I'm not too fond of plugins, nor of Android, which is terrible in terms of ads and surveillance.
I like simple and clear things for narrow-minded people like myself.

    Hello
Indeed, Firefox is rated very well for protection out of the box, and with "certain" plugins, you can block a lot of tracking, including Facebook...
    See you!

Thank you. I'm going to study that :-) I don't really like the idea of having to change and relearn how a new browser works, but I'm a bit stuck with my bookmarks that no longer work.

Yes, but since the bookmarks have been synchronized, those from my recent machine (not the new one I bought) synced to the old bookmarks and replaced my "recent" bookmarks (since autumn 2020).

    Hello
Oh, you hadn't given us that info!!
Have you tried searching (importing) the content from
    %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Opera Software\Opera Stable
    ?
That's generally where users without an account store their "unsynced" bookmarks!!
