Hello,
My old camcorder that reads 8mm tapes is broken, so I can no longer watch them. Is there an adapter that would allow me to view the tapes in my VCR? If so, could you let me know where I could buy it, and if not, what solution do I have to watch my tapes? Thank you.

I see that many people are like me, having issues with 8mm camcorders. I've had it repaired several times, and it lasts one month and costs €200 for repairs each time; it's a shame. A manufacturer should look into this problem and make an adapter; I think it would be profitable. Okay, it's a solution but I must admit that it's still expensive! 14 euros for the tape, that's not cheap for a copy!!! I have more than twenty tapes to copy, it's more cost-effective to buy a used camcorder, copy them onto VHS, and then burn them onto CD!
I'm looking for a tape adapter but it seems impossible to find one!! If you have any other ideas, feel free to let me know!!

There are only 3 solutions.
1) Have a competent person in your circle with the necessary equipment to possibly perform the transfers for free.
2) Have this work done by a professional, with the risks and costs that this may entail.
3) Buy a second-hand camcorder, do the transfers, and then resell it.
I had opted for choice 3 a long time ago and I just purchased a camcorder for 100 euros.
I have about fifteen tapes to transfer to my computer and then I will put it back up for sale for the same price.

yes, but be careful, not only are there more than forty people fighting on eBay with not much chance of winning... especially if you want to get the DVDs quickly (for example, as a Christmas gift), but also you have to know that not all Hi8 cameras read the tapes in exactly the same way and that it’s a stroke of luck to find the right Hi8 camera that will read yours well without any interference... (it all depends on the value you place on your family heritage represented by your tapes)... the simplest, fastest, and ultimately most economical way, if you calculate the hours of wasted time looking for a camera and then managing to transfer with a good computer (video is what takes the most time to do)... while ensuring maximum quality, is still to have it done or, at the very least, to rent a Hi8 camera..!

I also had this issue and 2 tapes from 2 cassettes broke, is it fixable? Otherwise, can you burn a DVD using a standalone DVD recorder from the output of an 8 mm camcorder playback on the TV?

You cannot use Hi 8 mm tapes on a VHS adapter due to a bandwidth issue...

The easiest way is to find a Hi8 camcorder and connect it directly to the PC, and then you're good to go; you can edit to your liking:

I read this forum with interest, because I am also struggling with all my old video tapes (8mm video, then HI 8 video - is there actually a difference between the two?). I switched to digital several years ago. However, I would like to be able to replay all my old tapes, so I need to invest in a second-hand camcorder that can play both HI and 8mm video - the solution proposed by "enretraite" seems good to me. My question is very simple: CAN a HI8 camcorder, which obviously plays HI8 tapes, also play 8mm tapes recorded about 20 years ago!!! with a Sony CCD 330 (the first "big" camcorders)? I use SOS cassette from Magix, it's great and easy. I transferred all my VHS to DVD and I was able to cut out the worn-out parts over time. The site is Magix.

I have an old Sony HI8 camcorder and a lot of tapes, but the only issue is that when I connect it to my LCD screen, I only get sound and... black and white!

Where could this come from? Since I've already tried changing the scart cable, I suspect the problem is with the camcorder, right?

a good solution .... do garage sales and you will find a camcorder in working condition for less than €20 at a cheap price.. some are getting rid of them .. or have your i8 tapes put on DVD by a friend ..... I do it ..... for my family and friends ..... I transfer the i8, the 8mm, the super 8 film, the VHS, and VHS-C to DVD and USB stick
