USB hub needed to connect a controller

Hello,

I am on Windows 10, on a desktop PC that is only 4 or 5 years old.
My configuration (just in case):
  • I7-4790K 4GB
  • Z97-GD65 MSI
  • 16GB RAM
  • 250GB SSD
  • Corsair CX750 power supply

I bought a HORI controller compatible with Series X and Windows 10, and a very particular problem has arisen...
I am not a beginner in computing but not a technician either, so I have tried everything I could at my level but without success.
My problem:
1- When I plug my controller into the front USB 3.0 port, the device manager indicates an unrecognized USB alert (address request...).
2- If I plug it into a USB 3.0 port on the motherboard (so directly at the back), the message is different; it does recognize the controller as an Xbox game device but still with a driver alert.

I have an arcade stick from HORI and a RAZER controller of the same kind (compatible with Xbox 360, ONE, and PC) that, when I plug them in, install and work correctly regardless of the USB port used.

I have a laptop with a similar configuration but less powerful on which the HORI controller I just bought works directly without issues, recognized as "Xbox game device" in the device manager.

I have tried numerous solutions before reaching out to you for help:
1- I tested all the USB ports on my tower via HDD, USB stick, and other controllers... No issues, but the HORI controller does not work on any and shows different messages in the device manager almost every time (with the yellow triangle)...
- USB not recognized
- USB not recognized with address request failure
- HORIPAD Pro for Xbox Series X
- Xbox game controller
- Unknown device
In short...
- I deleted all the old known controllers from the device manager by uninstalling them (thinking it might be a conflict) and did the same for all the hidden failed devices (all the connection attempts).
- I installed Xbox Accessories 1.2 and various Xbox One drivers for PC and others without any changes.
- I manually installed the drivers via the manager by selecting the "Xbox game device" driver (this is what it is called when I plug it into the laptop, and everything works fine).
- After that, I flashed my BIOS (when you don't know what else to do, you try everything...)
- I even ended up formatting the PC, erasing all data, and reinstalling everything to have a "new" system that (I was convinced) should have resolved the issue... But it didn't.
- The fact that the error messages are different depending on the ports, but not systematically, seems very strange to me.
- So, strange problem... let's try strange solutions... I connected my controller to a USB hub (4USB) and connected the hub to my PC via the front USB 3.0 port... and there... the controller worked directly as it did on my laptop.
- I then tried again without the hub, but the problem remains.

Even though my controller works when connected through a hub, I would like to find out where this problem is coming from to resolve it.

This kind of behavior makes me think of a USB controller going haywire, but why only with this controller... In short, I’m completely stuck, I need a little help please...

Thank you in advance!

Hello Jeannets, and thank you for your help and quick response.

I forgot to mention that before formatting the PC, I unplugged and cleaned everything (dust, CPU thermal paste, graphics card, etc...) and all my USB ports are working perfectly for all other devices (Razer Wolverine controller, HORI arcade stick, external HDDs, USB drives, etc...).
The wiring is fine since the issue only occurs with this particular controller (and I double-checked everything when reassembling) and it works once connected to the USB hub (which does not have a power supply).

There have been 2 or 3 times when Windows correctly configured the controller, telling me that the device is ready and the controller turned on, but it only lasted a few seconds, after which, nothing... driver error....
This has only happened 2 or 3 times out of hundreds of connections to different ports (USB 2.0 front, USB 3.0 front, USB 2.0 motherboard, and USB 3.0 motherboard), and the rest of the time the controller lights up briefly and then turns off... immediately permanently with an error.
    Thanks again ;)

Thank you, but these manipulations have already been done many times without success, both before and after formatting... uninstalling the hardware with driver deletion, not connecting at startup, connecting at startup, removing all non-essential components for the PC operation (GPU, all drives except the SSD, I unplugged 3 fans out of 6 (I kept CPU fan, FAN 1, and FAN 2), 4 and 8GB RAM (all tested) instead of 16GB... anyway, I've tried everything and I don't understand at all where it could be coming from....
Thanks anyway for your help ;)

In the hubs, there is a chip that reshapes the signals... I think of an electrical problem, cable shielding, grounding, radiation, or "hum" on the USB power supply... or even an induced hum on the USB cables inside the case... the remedy could be to put a metallic braid (sleeve) enveloping the USB connection from the front panel to its connection to the motherboard.

I think of something like that...

I have already tried unplugging everything that is not necessary for starting the PC, so the front panel is part of that, and there is obviously no cable for the USBs from the motherboard.
I mostly agree with you on pinpointing the problem; it revolves around the USB ports (or their configuration/power/drivers/conflicts...), but as I mentioned, without being a technician, I am also not a novice. I have been assembling and disassembling cases and doing basic IT troubleshooting for over 20 years.... I have solved hundreds of problems or conflicts, and I have never seen this.... so I need help, please... I cannot understand the behavior of the PC.

I told you to shield the connection cables because your problem only exists with the front sockets...

There's no need to take everything apart and reset it for that...

Uh... no, I think you misunderstood what I explained earlier... the problem occurs on ALL the USB ports of the PC, not just those on the front... and even with the front panel disconnected from the motherboard, the problem persists on the USB ports of the motherboard...

    I still read this well:
2- If I plug it into a USB 3.0 port on the motherboard (directly at the back), the message is different, it correctly recognizes the controller as an XBOX game device but still with a driver alert.

    In your initial POST

Is this equipment compatible with USB3 or only USB2..? or even with your version of Windows..? or your version of DirectX for example..?

Thank you again Jeannets for trying to help me ;)

I admit that I thought about the same thing as you regarding the type of USB compatibility (2.0 or 3.0), but why does the controller work on both USB 2.0 and 3.0 with a USB 2.0 hub?

By the way, since last night, the hub no longer works on the front ports (USB 2.0 or USB 3.0) and only works on a few of the motherboard ports (USB 2.0 and USB 3.0) but not on all, whereas the day before yesterday, I could plug the controller with the USB hub into any port (front and motherboard 2.0 and 3.0)...

The controller is Windows 10 compatible since it works directly on 2 other PCs running Windows 10.
I updated all the items in the device manager via TLD, updated DirectX, downloaded the AIO package of Visual C++, and Windows 10 is up to date...

I searched the manufacturer's website and there is no dedicated driver for this controller, just like the arcade stick and the Razer; it is supposed to be installed directly by Windows 10... and that is the case on the other 2 PCs...

The changing behavior of the errors without any hardware or software modification seems absurd to me... I don't understand....

Yes, but something must be wrong anyway...

-- One shouldn't jump to conclusions... Just because it works on a certain system doesn't mean it's compatible... It's not mandatory... you should first read the specifications stated by the manufacturer and not by the seller (Amazon, for example), then, for cross-testing, you need to do a double exchange with good results on both... and there are still errors, but fewer...

-- Since Windows 10, there are no more drivers; Windows Update takes full control, even printers no longer have drivers... It's a method from Microsoft to impose its dictates and eliminate old hardware without resorting to any other methods denounced by consumers...! That said, drivers still generally exist at the manufacturer's website, it's just more tedious...

There are also firmware updates that could modify things: here's an example.
    https://stores.horiusa.com/fighting-commander-octa-for-xbox-series-x-s-pc-firmware-update-notification/

You need to know your firmware version well, compare it with the site, possibly download it, and then do as they explain.

Well, I followed your advice and the tutorial from the HORI website for the firmware, and everything went exactly as the tutorial explained... no errors and everything went smoothly... That said... now the controller keeps vibrating indefinitely and is no longer recognized (even with the hub) and it doesn't turn on... it just vibrates...
Correction, sorry but actually the controller does turn on and works (with the hub)... the thing is it vibrates constantly since the firmware update...

I think we need to send a message to support... Their thing is a mess.

Well, I finally went ahead and did a standard exchange at the store, and the new controller (same reference) works immediately without a hub and on all USB ports; the problem indeed came from the device... but I'm quite curious to know why it worked on all my PCs except one... Very strange... If anyone has a theory? ... I'm putting the topic as "resolved" anyway (if I find out how to do that... I don't see a button...) but I'm really interested in an explanation for this issue... thanks again, Jeannets, for your help!

    Hello,

This problem is quite simple... your HORI is powered by the USB port and it likely requires more power than your PC can provide via USB... it's usually limited to 500mA, but the reality can vary slightly...
-- You should try all the USB ports on your PC, both USB2 and USB3, and make a list of what works and what doesn't...
-- The ones that don’t work might be poorly connected to the motherboard, inside the PC, usually small connectors on the periphery of the motherboard...
You need to recheck this wiring using the motherboard manual and be meticulous... possibly swap it with a working port.

If everything is fine, I don't know what else to say... I'm sorry.

I would advise you to uninstall the drivers for this controller... Unplug the controller... Restart the PC... install the dedicated Windows 10 drivers, without plugging in the controller... restart the PC... plug in the controller...

There you go, that's all I can say.
