My computer doesn't recognize my new camera.

Hello
I just bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ 71. When I tried to connect it to my computer, a message appeared on the screen saying "the new device is not recognized by my computer." What can I do to resolve this situation and transfer my photos?
Thank you in advance for your help.

Good evening,

For a device (such as a camera) to be recognized, a driver must have been written by the manufacturer of that device for the version of Windows you have.

Since your camera is recent, if you connect it to an older system (for example, Windows XP or Windows 7), it may not be recognized.

Since you haven't mentioned anything about your system, it's hard to know if that is the case.

That said, if you are using Windows 10, it should be recognized automatically or you need to install the driver from a provided CD.

Best regards

Since this is a second-hand camera, I don't have the CD that goes with it. But I can ask the person if they still have it. As for whether I have Windows 10, honestly, I have no idea. How can I tell if I have Windows 10 or Windows 7? My computer must be about 2 years old... Otherwise, can we transfer the photos to another device (like a USB key, for example) and then transfer them to the computer?
I had a Panasonic before this one, and I never needed a CD to transfer the photos; it all happened automatically...

It would be better for the previous owner to provide you with the CD, as I couldn't find it on the Panasonic website, unlike the manual, which is available there.

The version displays when you open your session, at startup then.

You can check it by right-clicking the Windows button and opening the system section; if you have an older version of Windows, go to the control panel and open the system section.

You can also ask someone more experienced to point it out for you.

Windows 10 existed two years ago, but there’s no saying that it’s the system installed on your PC.

Can we transfer photos to another medium? Yes, the medium in question is an SD card.

I’ve never needed a CD to transfer photos. Transfer isn't the issue right now, for which we don't need a CD, but rather installing your camera on your PC.

As you don't mention everything at first glance (a new and a used device do not have the same problems), it’s possible that someone installed it for you.

I asked the previous owner for the installation CD. I'm waiting for their response.
I checked, I do have Windows 10.
And I can indeed use an SD card; I think that, while waiting for the installation CD, it's the best thing to do. Or I can ask someone who knows better than I do to help me out! But during this COVID period, many people don’t want to come...

Since you have Windows 10, the recognition should happen automatically, without the use of the CD. I assume you are using a USB cable. Try another one, and on a different USB port. I completely understand and share the caution of your acquaintances. It's better to wait for better days.

It is indeed possible that the cord is defective. I don't have another one that fits this camera. I will go buy another one on Tuesday. In the meantime, I will try the SD card.

Otherwise, the camera is equipped with WIFI. I read the instructions but I didn't understand everything...

It is indeed more complicated because handling a Wi-Fi network, while not difficult, is more demanding than simply plugging in a USB cable.

That said, before changing the cable, it would be better to test the connection on another PC (even though I do not forget the access difficulty you mentioned).

I tried connecting the camera to a friend's computer, and it works. So it's definitely my PC that doesn't recognize my digital camera. And this friend's computer is 6 months old.

Knowing that Windows already integrates or updates drivers as part of its automatic updates (windows update), we can only assume that the driver in question is present but damaged.

The solution consists in all cases of reinstalling this driver.

Problem: it is unavailable on the Panasonic website (by the way, a very good brand with very good products).

I will continue to search for this driver unless the previous owner can provide it to you.

edit:

Moreover, do USB devices (USB flash drives, mice, etc.) work properly?

Can you borrow a digital camera (anyone) and test it on your PC?
