Hard Drive and Chromebook

Hello,
I bought a hard drive that is supposed to be compatible with Chromebooks, and when I connect it to my computer, a message appears saying that it is not recognized. I then try to format it, but the formatting gets stuck at 1%.
Does anyone have the same problem and a solution?

    Hello,
    Do you have a Windows or Linux (or Mac) PC on hand?
    If so, connect it and check that there is at least one partition on it (fat32, ntfs... it doesn't matter). If it works under Windows, it should work under Chrome OS.

    If the disk is correctly partitioned, check the connection cable to your Chromebook.

      Hello, thank you for your response. I tried with a Windows and a message appears when I try to open the local disk saying: F:/ is not accessible. Incorrect parameter.
      I don't know where this might come from...

        Your disk is empty (which is normal if it's new), it doesn't have a partition table...
        You need to
        1 - Create a partition table (msdos or gpt)
        2 - create at least one primary partition

        You can do this on Windows, but don't ask me how because I don't use Windows.
        A search on Google will provide you with the information.

    Hello.
    On Windows 10, you need to open File Explorer, then go to the problematic drive and right-click to format it.

    However, normally if this HDD is not formatted, Windows should prompt you on the first use. If it does not, there is another issue.

    Otherwise, you need to go to Disk Management to format it or check the problem.

      I have an old computer running Windows that is very slow, so I don’t know if that’s the reason, but when I right-click to format, nothing happens.

      If nothing happens, then you need to go to Disk Management to see if this HDD appears.
      If it doesn't appear, it means that the drive is faulty.

      What’s surprising is that you can’t format an HDD with your Chromebook?
      Yet Chromebook is capable of doing this operation.

      If your purchase is recent, you’ll need to return it so the seller can check this HDD.

      Can you give us the brand and model of this so-called Chromebook compatible drive because honestly, all external drives or USB keys are compatible with Chromebooks.

    Good evening,
    If you are talking about drive F, it is in raw; so it is not recognized by Windows.
    Have you right-clicked on it to see the options?
    I am not familiar with Chromebook for your information.

    OK, got it.
    Not knowing what to make of this material, I suggest you test it with a simple USB drive on your Chromebook and on your old PC.
    If the USB drive is recognized without issues, it means that your purchase on Amazon is defective and you can return it.
