Hello,
To my great dismay, I have to buy a new TV. It's a basic full HD Phillips model without 4K, HDR, or anything else. I have two problems:
- It doesn't play AVI files, which includes a good portion of the series I watch. Is there an easy way to convert an AVI to MKV, for instance, without too much loss of quality for someone like me who knows nothing about it?
- When I watch a movie, regardless of the file, the image is systematically stretched upwards, the actors look like Slender Man. I've tested the various picture settings offered by my TV, but nothing works. Can I also modify the files in some way to fix this problem?
If someone who knows about this could help me, it would be really nice, because I truly know nothing; I'm a complete klutz when it comes to technology, and it may seem like a detail, but being mostly bedridden, the TV is practically my only pastime.
Thanks in advance.

Good evening, in the manual you should have the formats that your TV reads.
Format Factory changes any format on the free site.

Hello,
In my opinion, you should avoid redoing all your files; it's time-consuming, prone to errors, etc.. etc..
How many videos do you have..?? And are they all in AVI format..?? On a hard drive or elsewhere..?
First of all, you need to provide the brand and model of your TV BRAND and MODEL.. because we need to know at least what this TV is capable of reading... or not.. -
This is a PHILIPS LED TV model 43PFS5505. The files are what I download from a famous site z*** telechar******. Then I put them on a USB stick. I don't know if it's due to the file type or how they are made by those who make them. Nevertheless, .mkv files always play. .mp4 files do too, but the quality is not great. However, 95% of the .avi files do not work. And I also don't understand why when it comes to a movie, the image is always stretched upwards.

OK ... This TV reads "AVI containers" well as mentioned in the specifications...
https://www.philips.fr/c-p/43PFS5505_12/5500-series-televiseur-led-fhd
It all depends on what the supplier puts in the AVI container...??
And how many of these files would you need to modify..?
If you could send me the analysis of one of these files that doesn't work...
For that, you install "MediaInfo" on your PC https://mediaarea.net/fr/MediaInfo and with that, you select one of your AVI videos ==> right click ==> view ==> text == ok
It shows you a whole text from the information about your video... You can copy and paste it here, so I can see how these films are made... it's certainly the supplier who is being fanciful. -

So, I watched one:
"Mon.Inconnue.2019.FRENCH.BDRip.XviD-FuN.WwW.ZT-ZA.COM.avi"
1° -- The title is very long and has characters that your TV might not support... So you can simply rename this movie to "Mon.inconnu.2019.avi" and see if it works or not...
2° -- Change the AVI extension to MP4 like this "Mon.inconnu.2019.mp4" and see what happens.
You can try this on several files...
If it doesn't work, change the name back to AVI instead of mp4... and we'll see about it.
But in any case, come back here to let us know what happened..-
Hello,
"The files are what I download from a famous site z*** downl******. Then I put them on a USB stick"
Honestly, you're asking for help with illegal, risky, banned & monitored Z*A # platforms:
https://www.generation-nt.com/google-lien-piratage-demande-dereferencement-actualite-1985694.html
By browsing these sites, they only offer .mp4 formats or even H.265!
So be careful with your AVI videos
Hi everyone -
I tried, and unfortunately, it doesn't work. I still get the message "unsupported file." My TV reads AVI files, but maybe it's the way the links are made. In any case, even with lengthy titles, MKV and MP4 files play without any problem.
Thank you for trying to help me; it's kind of you. However, it's normal if I sometimes take a long time to respond. (I just found the strength to read my messages and turn on the computer to charge the USB drive and test it, and it exhausted me. I'm going to lie down again.)

OK, sorry that it isn't working... so we need to think about re-encoding... these files.
Read the entire explanation carefully once before starting the execution.
For your case, I suggest you install "CapTVty" on your PC http://captvty.fr/
And on your PC's drive, create a new folder... Video-recode... which will be used to receive your re-encoded videos..
This software is normally designed to capture Replay Videos from our TV channels ... but you can also use the tab ==> conversion ==> add... and there, you select all the files you want to convert or about ten at once, if you have many... They will all be placed in the bottom window ===> select them all with your mouse, they turn blue. ==> click on "Matroska" and off you go for the conversion to MKV of all the selected files.
To choose the destination folder for your re-encoded videos, go to the bottom right "Options" ==> downloads and file names == Click on the small arrow on the left of this line... ==> Browse... and there, you choose your destination folder... Video-recode
This content is what you will need to copy onto your USB stick to go to your TV, and I hope you can read them...
And despite everything, you will also be able to record TV programs in replay to watch them at your convenience, later...
There you go, hoping not to have made you consume too much Doliprane...
