How to remove the vertical email forwarding bars

Solved

Hello,
On my Mac, the combination of Alt and Shift + L is not working.
It might be due to my Mac being over ten years old: OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.6
I'm sorry to insist, but for my work, I often need to refer back to emails before forwarding them, and the colored vertical bars are really bothersome.
Thank you in advance for your help!
Brigitte

Configuration: Macintosh / Chrome 86.0.4240.198

Good evening,
Just a suggestion, by the way!
I'm on El Capitan and the mentioned key combination is indeed working well.
Could there be confusion between the caps lock key (sticky) and shift (temporary)? | | |
Has the type of Mac been mentioned before?

Hi Francis ;)

When it's urgent, it's already too late (Talleyrand)
When everything has failed, read the manual ;)

Hello,

Like Brigitte, I’m on El Capitan and I also use Mail to manage my emails.
When I tell Mail to forward an email, I end up with this:

In other words, a new email consisting of a stack of previous emails, each text colored and preceded by a colored vertical bar.

When I want to retrieve the text from the previous email and thus remove a vertical bar, I do this:
• I select the entire stack of emails by pressing the  and A keys. The entire email turns blue:

Then there are two possibilities:
• either I select the menu “Format -> Indentation -> Decrease”
• or I click on the following button:

then I choose the submenu “Unindent”:

Once this is done, the text from the previous email has been unindented, turned black, and its vertical bar has been removed:

If I repeat the operation, i.e., press  and A then choose the menu or button “Unindent”, the email looks like this:

Etc...

Then just delete the unwanted texts and add your own text.

Hoping to have answered Brigitte's request

Hi Ritchi,

Thank you for your reply. Good info!
I've never tried this action. I'll give it a go when I get the chance...

Have a good Sunday ;-)

Good evening,

On my Mac, the alt and Shift together + L do not work

this key combination is intended to use the character called "Pipe", that is to say a straight bar like this:

|

I do not understand what you mean by:

the colored vertical bars are really annoying

In any case, this has nothing to do with the combination of the 3 keys

alt shift L

which are intended to use the character |

...??

Best regards.

Good evening Francis, No, I am indeed clicking on the temporary uppercase and the vertical colored bars are not going away.
It's a mystery.
Thank you anyway, it's nice of you to have tried to help me.
Have a lovely evening and looking forward to it!

and the colored vertical bars do not go away.

??

which colored bars are you talking about?

The key combination mentioned is meant to write the character | in a text, not to make "colored vertical bars" disappear...

For example, in the following sentence, I will replace the commas with the character |, and to do this I will use the key combination:

alt Shift L

"Hello| how are you?, well I hope| otherwise let me know..."

Upon rereading your initial request, I understand that you want to forward an email without the vertical lines on the left side in the email... It seems to me that the only solution is not to forward the email as is, but to copy the text from the received email beforehand, then in the message forward, erase the included text, and paste what has been copied...

Hello Francis ^^ When you reply to an email on Mac, a colored bar appears on the side of the email, that's what Brigitte is referring to.

Looking forward to it, Ciao

Yes, I just realized. Our messages crossed paths, see my comment just above.

XD I'm looking for how to remove them (Indeed it's annoying because while editing on my Mac it doesn't show up)

For me, it's simple:

open the received message,
select the text
copy
request the transfer to xxx
clear the content with its sidebars
paste the previously copied text
send...

Simple and quick

Hello again! I found the solution!

1: Select the pre-written text in the email transfer
2: Delete the (Re-add it AT THE END OF THE ACTION if needed)
3: Click next to this bar and then click on the delete button!

Thank you for taking so much trouble!
Yes, that is indeed what it is about, and I of course tried to copy and paste my letter into a new email, but the bar copies along with the text.
I’m sure it’s possible because I used to do it in the past; I could even remove several colored bars by repeating the process as long as there were some left, but I forgot and I’ve tried many combinations without success, and the person who taught me how to do it remains unreachable.
I don’t want to bother you any longer, don’t worry, I should have noted this manipulation; it would have saved me from having to retype all the letters...
Good night and thanks again!

When you copy the text from the original message, there are no sidebars, so copying and pasting is possible and easy.

But if the text to be sent is already a forwarded text, therefore with sidebars from the original, the solution is to copy everything into a text editor, for example TextEdit, then clean it up before pasting it into the email to be sent...
