Hello everyone.
Here is my problem:
I am currently building a PC to create a custom mod.
The motherboard does not have any port to connect a screen. So I bought a USB-HDMI converter to connect a monitor. This is supposed to work only after Windows and certain drivers are installed (according to the Amazon comments of the purchase in question).
I have therefore retrieved a graphics card on PCI Express to install the system; so far, so good. I install the drivers for the converter, everything is fine too.
Then, I plug a second HDMI cable into the converter already connected to the motherboard, and then the PC freezes, and I get a blue screen. I force the shutdown, but nothing powers back on, I unplug the power supply to check, and I notice that the motherboard stays on even after being unplugged for a while... And then I realize my mistake: the HDMI cable I plugged into the converter is not connected to a second screen, but to the PC that usually uses that monitor.
Fortunately, that PC didn't experience any issues.
That said, I notice that connecting the HDMI to another screen seems to power the motherboard, though!
I correct my error and reconnect the cable properly, but since then, I can't turn on the PC that I'm trying to get to work (which was functioning until then...)
So, it's a stressful moment; I'm worried that the motherboard has been damaged... Do you think that's possible? In my opinion, if you connect a cable incorrectly, it might not work, but to the point of damaging a component... Do you think I have a chance of getting it to work again, or am I looking at reinvesting in a motherboard, or even a motherboard/processor combo?
Any advice from you would be welcome... Knowing that I've been trying to do a hard reset for a while, but without success... When I try to turn on the case, nothing spins, not even the processor fan... But the LEDs on the motherboard do light up (including the power and reset buttons on the motherboard).
Thanks in advance...

We have difficulty understanding your problem. Instead of writing a novel, you should have presented your issue concisely. Give us information about your PC (motherboard, CPU, etc.) and the converter you used.

First of all, thank you very much for taking the time to think about what is happening to me.
What I wanted to say, to keep it simple, is that I connected a PC (let's call it PC 1) that I am building, with an HDMI cable, but instead of connecting it to a screen, like an idiot I connected it to another PC (PC 2) that was also running.
PC 1 has no video port by default, so if we were to draw a diagram, it would look like this:
PC1, with a converter to turn a USB port into HDMI, => HDMI cable, => running PC 2.
Following this wiring error, which lasted a few minutes and I corrected as soon as I realized it, PC 2 had absolutely no problem, but PC 1 showed a blue screen that said data recovery nani nana, then system reboot. But the data recovery displayed on the blue screen remained stuck at 0%.
So I turned off PC 1, but since then, it has been impossible to turn it back on...
I'm afraid of what might have happened to the motherboard of PC 1, so... Do you think it might have completely burned out, or is it retrievable?
As for the configuration, the motherboard is an Asus P6T Deluxe V2, the processor, I think it's an Intel, but I don't know the exact model (it's equipment that was given to me, and which worked very well until my cable mistake).
For the USB => HDMI converter, it is this model: https://www.amazon.fr/gp/product/B08BRJ5KD1/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Sorry for the lack of precision and for the length of my previous message, I wrote it in a hurry, under stress, between two clear CMOS. ^^".
If someone can help me, any advice would be welcome. Thank you in advance... -
Your connection could just not work; it shouldn't be the cause of your problem.
An Asus P6T Deluxe V2 motherboard (socket 1366) is not very recent. It is likely second-hand. This might be where you need to look for the problem's origin. Furthermore, CPUs intended for this motherboard do not have an IGP (integrated graphics processor), so you can't get any display without a dedicated graphics card.
Note: "I'm installing the converter's drivers, everything is working fine too."
.
I'm surprised that kind of device comes with drivers.

I was surprised too!
In fact, when you plug in the converter, a drive appears in Windows, just like when you plug in a USB drive; there must be some internal memory... You install the drivers for your Windows (10, in my case), and it's supposed to work right away (or after a reboot, I don't remember).
I didn't know that either; I found out in the product comments on Amazon...
When I connected the two motherboards with the HDMI cable, I noticed that even after unplugging the power supply, the LEDs on the motherboard that no longer worked stayed lit... So I wonder if the HDMI cable, being connected to a working PC, could have sent electricity to the motherboard causing me problems and damaged something?
You are absolutely right; it's not very recent, and yes, it's second-hand... However, until I made my connection error, everything was working perfectly... I was able to connect a new SATA hard drive and install a system, boot from it, everything... The problems arose afterwards...
And yes, it’s true that this motherboard doesn't allow a screen to be connected natively.
That's why I salvaged a PCI Express card from another setup temporarily while I installed Windows and the HDMI-USB converter.
The idea was to use the PCI Express card to connect a secondary screen using the converter, then set it as the main screen, so I could remove the PCI Express card.
I hoped that the PC could start like this, reach Windows, and then that the converter would allow the screen to display...
Unfortunately, the machine decided to stop working just before I could check if it was working...
If you have a suggestion that could prevent me from urgently buying a new motherboard...
Thank you, in any case, for taking the time to help online, even at such late hours... -
Hello,
start the power supply alone, check that it runs well, unplug everything and put a paperclip or equivalent on pins 15 and 16 or 16 and 17 > https://img-19.ccm2.net/11s7S7m4dQ2_a-P2FDtjyceHL1c=/97afcc73451640119166fddca728dcea/ccm-ugc/0fnBtRvDIEZfD-atx-connector-20-24pin.png
try to turn it on with only power supply, motherboard, processor (+heatsink), powerswitch/powerled. nothing else plugged in, neither to the motherboard nor to the power supply. if still nothing, try without the processor. -
Miracles do exist, it seems like I rang the alarm too soon!
Yet after leaving the PC unplugged and the battery removed for over an hour yesterday, it still didn't work.
I followed your advice to connect only the minimum, and it started working again!
I added the graphics card, and everything was fine!
I reconnected the hard drive, and now I'm getting into Windows! ^^.
I even managed to install the drivers for the Wi-Fi dongle, everything seems okay... I don't know what happened yesterday... Can a residual electrical charge remain in one of the components for more than an hour, even when fully unplugged?
Well, I didn't dare to retest the USB-HDMI converter for the moment! Lol.
Do you think such gadgets can cause that much trouble?
In any case, thank you both for the help you provided and for showing interest in my problem... If I encounter any issues again while creating my mod, I won't hesitate to come back for advice...
Thanks again, and maybe see you soon! ;). (Fingers crossed for no more problems! :).) -
I could have secured the motherboard or the power supply, and it could take all night to return to normal just by unplugging it, without any special manipulations?
Apparently, my manipulation would only be valid if I had an integrated graphics card on the motherboard, which is not the case. So there’s nothing that could generate a video signal... I thought I could use the converter as an external graphics card, but I was told that it wasn't the case...
So you're not the only one who thinks my manipulation seems suspicious...
That said, I think that by connecting the converter the right way, I don't risk much attempting it... I could try and see what happens, but apparently, I'm going to have to find a spot in my mod to put a PCI-Express graphics card... Because the motherboard in question is an X58, from what I've been told, and there’s no integrated graphics chip.
Thanks for the help and the advice, by the way, I really appreciate it! I'll get back to you if I'm in trouble at some point! :).-
"I could have secured the motherboard or the power supply and have to wait the whole night for it to return to normal by unplugging it, without doing any special manipulations?" Yes, for example, my brother's computer has trouble starting up or coming out of sleep mode; we leave it unplugged for 1-2 hours and it starts fine.
It's the "adapter" side that seems suspicious to me. An HDMI to USB adapter for video output is possible in itself, but this adapter must contain a graphics circuit capable of handling video. After that, if it can use the graphics processor of the graphics card or the integrated graphics chip, I couldn't say.
I've already seen people on the forum for whom this type of adapter works, so it doesn't seem impossible to me that it works, or at least with certain types of adapters.

Well, that's the thing, unplugging for an hour, so that all the capacitors are drained, I understand, but that's what I did the night of my problem, and it still persisted... It took a whole night for it to work again! ^^.
(Have you tried unplugging your brother's PC, holding down the power button on the tower for 10 seconds, and then plugging it back in? Sometimes "purging" it like that can save hours of waiting, you never know! ;). You might already know the trick, but just in case, it's something that has helped a lot of people on the forums. ;).)
I thought that since there wasn't an onboard graphics card in the PC, this type of adapter would contain the minimum necessary to get a display, but from what I've been told, that's not the case, and it's just a converter, hence the need to have a graphics card somewhere, and since there isn't one integrated into the motherboard, I'm probably going to have to add one on PCI-E... I'll still test it first, to see! Just in case, as you say, the adapter might have what it takes...
If you know of other models of adapters that are more likely to work with my setup for external video, it would help me save space in the mod, so I'm open to suggestions! ;).
Whatever happens, thanks again for your advice! :).
