Installing Kubuntu in dual boot with Windows...

Hello,

To perform a test, I would like to install KUBUNTU 18.04 in dual boot with Windows (7 or 10), but unlike other distributions derived from UBUNTU, KUBUNTU seems to only be installable on the whole hard drive and offers no other alternative.

Is there a trick to work around this problem so that Windows is not overwritten during the installation of KUBUNTU...

That's not normal, if that's the case, we should check the existing partitions...
From the live USB session of Kubuntu, open the terminal and provide the output of the following command:
```
sudo fdisk -l 
```
(letter L)

Note: Ubuntu 20.04 should be released today, Kubuntu should follow closely or do the same, it might be worth waiting a day or two for the latest LTS version...

OK, that's what I'll do, thanks for the advice. Since it was just a test anyway, I can wait a few more days...

Thank you for the information... I downloaded it and it is exactly the same problem with this new version. There are no alternatives available except by manually selecting the partition, Kubuntu still refuses to install on it.
Either I'm missing something or Kubuntu is acting like Microsoft, that is, pulling the covers over itself without caring about others.

Anyway, I don't have time to waste on this and I'm letting it go. I will test other distributions that install in dual-boot without hassle...

  It doesn't come from Kubuntu; it comes from the existing partitioning on the disk. If it doesn't offer to install alongside Windows, it's because it can't do it. You can try any distro; it will be the same thing.
  Provide the output of the command
  sudo fdisk -l

I typed the command sudo fdisk 1l and I got the following message:

"Change will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them"

"fdisk: cannot open 1l: no such file or directory"

I don't quite understand the message, but for information, I can install in dual-boot on this same disk UBUNTU, LBUNTU, DEBIAN and LINUX MINT...

If someone can understand better...

  You have a 500 GB disk with 2 partitions (sda1 and sda3) and an MSDOS partition table.
  
  What is strange is that your second partition is numbered 3 instead of 2, and furthermore, the starting sectors are very odd, which is probably what is causing the installer to struggle in determining your disk's layout ;-((
  
  For comparison, here's what the command outputs on my VM running Windows 10 where I launched the installation of Kubuntu:
  
  $ sudo fdisk -l

  Could you provide us with a screenshot of the partitions on your hard drive in GParted? Because I have the impression that there is unallocated disk space (about sixty GB missing). Apparently, there have been deleted partitions on this disk.
  
  Your disk is in MBR format, which means you can only have a maximum of 4 primary partitions.
  You currently have 2 primary partitions occupied by Windows (most likely the system and data).
  You will need to reduce the size of the sda3 partition, which is 304 GB, to free up space for Kubuntu.
  You can do this with the GParted utility, which should be on the Kubuntu live USB.
  Launch it, select the sda3 partition, right-click, and choose "resize," and free up a good hundred GB if you can.
  In that space, create your Linux partitions (new, primary partition, format ext4), and don't forget to click the validate button.
  If you want to create more than 2 new partitions, you will need to do so through an extended partition.
  After that, you can indicate to the installer where you want Kubuntu to be installed.

  Here's the reason why:
  
  The Kubuntu installer does not offer the option "Install alongside Windows Boot Manager" that exists in the Ubuntu installer when Windows is pre-installed (see install_ubuntu_a_cote_de).
