Slow Computer - Cleaning Tips

Hello everyone,

I bought an Acer Aspire 5 in December 2019 – my first experience with Acer.
Today is April and I've never had such a slow computer, meaning it's almost about to bug when I use YouTube for example (it "freezes" for 1 second sometimes).

I'm looking for valuable advice and a guide to 1) help me clean it up, 2) identify best practices to avoid it slowing down again :)

The computer is particularly slow (already slow to begin with), but even more so when I use Google Chrome. When I have 1 tab open, I see 9 tabs (403MB) in the Task Manager. I've read other topics and I understood that Chrome opens multiple tabs for extensions, etc., however I don't have many extensions apart from Adblock Plus and the Docs/Sheet/Slides apps. I also read somewhere that Chrome stored a lot of data, and might not be the most recommended browser? It does seem like the fastest for my use, though.

(Currently 4 tabs open and 19 tabs in the Manager - 706MB!)

Another suspicion: I use Avast and I have the impression that it also uses a lot of memory on my computer; it appears 5 times in my Manager...?

So as you can see, I'm a bit lost and I need your insights! It's really frustrating knowing that the computer has only been used for 4 months (and that I don't even use it that much)...

Let me know if you need more information.

Thanks in advance,
Victoria

Hello
what's the exact model of the PC??
example: Acer Aspire 5 A515-54-71SK
and yes remove "AVAST"
uninstall "AVAST" it's too resource-hungry
and let Windows Defender take over, that's sufficient
how to uninstall Avast properly
see here

Hello, thank you for your reply.

My computer is an Aspire 5 A515-54-54XP
Intel Core i5 8GB RAM 256GB SSD 1TB SATA

I uninstalled Avast using the uninstaller and it seems to be running faster. However, is Windows Defender really sufficient? Considering that I use streaming sites, etc. What are the other recommended free antivirus programs?

I see that Google Chrome is still using a lot of memory, as well as some "Antimalware Service Executable," "ACCStd," "Application Frame Host," etc.
I would like to uninstall all unnecessary programs from my PC, what software do you recommend?

Thank you,
Victoria

no need for another antivirus, Windows Defender is sufficient
do a cleanup
go to the explorer
right-click on the drive " C " > properties > disk cleanup > clean up system files
to properly uninstall software " revo uninstaller "

Hello,

If KB4549951 is installed, uninstall it.

And:

To check your computer for potential infections and get a general status of the system:

Follow the FRST tutorial by clicking on this blue link. ( take the time to read carefully - everything is well explained ).

Download and run the FRST scan,
Wait for the scan to finish, a message will indicate that the analysis is complete.

Three FRST reports will be generated:
  • FRST.txt
  • Shortcut.
  • Additional.txt

Send these 3 reports to the site https://pjjoint.malekal.com/ and in return give the 3 pjjoint links that lead to the reports here in a new response so that we can consult them.

(The blue links lead to step-by-step explanatory tutorials, click on them for more precise instructions to follow).

Hello,

I cleaned the disk and uninstalled everything I could uninstall with Revo.

The computer itself isn't slow anymore, but when it comes to using the internet with Chrome, it's still the same issue. Opening YouTube is a real hassle, when I type on Facebook the letters appear with a 1s delay, there are always navigation bugs between each tab, in short, I don't know where the problem comes from.

Thank you,
Victoria

Good evening,

To answer the initial question as well as this one, you might try temporarily (or permanently) replacing Google Chrome with Firefox or other browsers.

Especially since (according to them), Firefox limits data tracking via websites as much as possible, and for privacy and confidentiality, that's an advantage. Also, Google Chrome is known to be very resource-hungry. You might also try uninstalling/reinstalling to see.

I’m relatively surprised that your computer is so slow with the technical specifications it has... Could the problem be of a viral nature?

Have a good evening.

Hello,

I tested for a few days by uninstalling Chrome and then using Firefox.
With a new Chrome, there was no change, it's still just as slow. However, with Firefox, it seems to be better - I will continue to test its capabilities in the coming days, especially with YouTube (which I haven't done yet).

I noticed that the slowness depends on the time of day, and I wonder if it could be related to my connection? (which is good, though)

Regarding a potential viral issue, how can I check?

Thank you for your replies and have a good evening.

Hello,

Well, this is really unbearable, after two days of testing with Firefox my computer is still just as slow considering I hardly use it for anything! This is not normal.

I tried to perform a factory reset by going to System Settings > Reset this PC, but the computer fails to complete it. "There was a problem resetting your PC. No changes were made."

What can I do? My computer is unusable even though it's only 4 months old.

Thanks to anyone who can help :)

Hello,

KB4549951 is not installed on my computer.

I ran the FRST scans as instructed, but I only received 2 reports (I didn't get the SHORTCUT).

FRST: https://pjjoint.malekal.com/files.php?id=FRST_20200430_f8f15n10c10l8

ADDITION: https://pjjoint.malekal.com/files.php?id=20200430_r12f12z12f9e11

EDIT: actually, in the tutorial, Shortcut is not checked in the screenshot. I checked it and was able to generate the 3rd report.

SHORTCUT: https://pjjoint.malekal.com/files.php?id=20200430_i10k7p6q13k11

Thank you,
Victoria

You have uTorrent running, it slows down the machine.
Turn it off and see what happens when it's not running.

Uninstall App Explorer

I had already tried closing uTorrent and it didn't really change much.

On the other hand, I uninstalled App Explorer and restarted my PC, and indeed it seems to be much faster now! It makes all the difference. I'm going to test it for a few days and will confirm quickly if the problem is resolved.

Thank you and have a good evening,
Victoria

However, uTorrent consumes a lot of resources.
Just wait and see over time =)

Hello,

After a few days of testing, I can say that it's better since I uninstalled App Explorer and killed uTorrent.
However, at certain times, I still experience slowdowns. The same web browsing issue persists (Firefox consuming memory). I guess there's nothing to be done and that it's related to my connection or my computer (this model being really lousy).

Thank you for helping me, we can mark this topic as resolved and close it!

Happy easing of restrictions to everyone,
Victoria
