Reading a DVD on an ASUS laptop

Thank you, Jojo, for your response. I’ll keep your link in case I can't figure out why the DVD isn't playing!

When I insert my DVD, a window opens to show me the audio TS and video TS files of this DVD, but even opening them, nothing happens!!

As you told me, I went to the device manager, but it’s not mentioned there by default; I have to look in the taskbar to find the DVD icon, and if I check its functionality, it says the drive is working properly!!

If you see the audio TS and video TS files on your DVD: your player is working properly!!
How do you play them with VLC??
You need to select "Open Folder" in Media and choose the video TS folder on your DVD, and the movie should play normally.

When I'm on the TS video files and I right-click to open and read these files, apart from reading on the device, VLC is not mentioned, yet I have it, but only my TV which is on Wi-Fi!!!!!!!!
There are increasingly strange things happening! While the audio CDs have no playback issues!!!

@michele5415First, open VLC, then you need to choose "Media" and select "Open Folder," and choose the "VIDEO_TS" folder from your DVD, and usually the movie will start playing.

Well, it's up to you since you're the author of the topic...
If I understood correctly, your problem doesn't concern the recognition of the DVD by the player (see macbernic's comment) but rather the playback. I'm just wondering if you can play the DVDs on a standalone player.
In fact, due to potential protections on commercial DVDs, playback on a computer can sometimes prove impossible. However, DVDFab HD Decrypter should theoretically solve that, and if my memory serves me right...

You can also uninstall Spybot Search and Destroy by the way, it's outdated today unless you're using the paid version.
And if you want to properly uninstall a software, you can use Revo Uninstaller, which can clean up the registry.

Is this TS file large? What is its name?
Normally, VLC can read TS files, so I don't know why you can't open your file with this player...

Do you only have one file in the VIDEO_TS folder?
If not, I hope you have a file named VTS_01_1.VOB or something like that, meaning a large file of 0.99 GB?
These large VOB files contain the video (the movie) of the DVD-Video, right?

On another note, could you describe or take a screenshot of the content of this VIDEO_TS folder?

So, since the time is going to be long, is there by any chance a solution to download these DVDs to my desktop, or even to a USB stick???? This way, the DVDs can be stored safely away!!!!!! Hehehe

You can put the entire content of the VIDEO_TS folder on the desktop (I don't recommend putting files/folders on the desktop but rather organizing them elsewhere on your computer; in short, you should tidy up your PC... and be organized and methodical... but everyone does as they want or can...) using several methods:
- by using software like DVD Shrink, DVDDecrypter (older software), DVDFab HD Decrypter, and others
- by direct copying with copy/paste or by using the free version of ISOBuster
- some of these programs can even create an ISO image, which means a single large file identical to the DVD's content
However, if the commercial DVD has protections, ripping will not be possible.
Another note, commercial DVDs often average more than 5 GB, so you need to have a lot of space available on your hard drives.

As for putting it on a USB stick, I would suggest converting the DVD to a file type like AVI, MP4, or MKV because the special structure of a DVD-Video is intended to be read by a DVD player in principle. This could be a standalone player with a burned or commercial DVD. On a computer, however, since we can read almost anything, there are several ways to proceed with the appropriate tools (software) as you have managed to do ;-)
As for software capable of doing this conversion, if it is feasible, I can mention, for example, XMedia Recode, FaireUse Wizard (it's an old software that creates files exactly 700 MB for the free version), HandBrake, probably Format Factory (I no longer use it because of the adware it contains) and others like Avidemux, and so on.
Encoding (conversion) can take time with an "old" not very powerful computer like yours seems to be. But we should still manage because I used to do it on XP about 20 years ago and I would leave my machine running overnight for a movie.

Personally, I have practiced ripping for a long time, but for quite some time now, I no longer do it as films have become digital with the development of VOD sites. My help consists only of drawing from my memories on this subject. However, I do a lot of conversion of films from TNT that I record, so I know a bit about encoding/conversion...
