Hello, I have an old Mac (Mac OS X 10.6.8) and my browser is outdated but I can't install a new one. In a few days, I will lose access to both YouTube and my email. Does anyone have any ideas other than buying a new computer? Configuration: Macintosh / Chrome 49.0.2623.112

This MacBook, provided it has 8 Go of memory, the exact amount of which you do not specify, can run on 10.13.6, allowing you to browse any site of your choice.
However, I don't know/believe if you can directly upgrade to this version from Snow Leopard. Check these links.

For the memory, you can go up to 16 Go, which means two 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM sticks.

For 8 Go you need two 4 Go sticks.

If it's indeed a MacBook 7.1 (13"), it was released between May 2010 and July 2011 and can only go up to 10.13.6, as already mentioned, so Mojave is not accessible to it.

You are currently on 10.6.8 and I have explained everything to you (message 7 above)

So either you made a mistake with the reference, or you are not following the advice given.

OS X El Capitan is the last version compatible with a 2008 Mac, but you'll still have the latest version of the software.

last night I tried to upgrade to El Capitan but I might have gone about it the wrong way....

So I downloaded El Capitan with the link, I installed it and a window opened (it talked about a package...), it said on the window that it might take a long time, in my case it only took 3 minutes.
The window then said it was done,
since the computer didn't turn off by itself, I turned it off,
and I'm still on mac OS X 10.6.8

There certainly hasn't been any download.
I assume your MacBook is connected to the Internet, via Wi-Fi, so it would be better to connect it to your router with an Ethernet cable; it's safer and more efficient, depending on your connection (ADSL, cable, or fiber optic).
As for the installation, it can take more than 30 minutes.
Another thing, I hope you have enough space on your hard drive; you haven't mentioned it! We're asking you for explanations, but you're not providing them! We are not clairvoyants, and it’s frustrating to have to demand details without receiving them; we’re wasting time, and we don't necessarily have much to dedicate to you :-)
For example, you don't mention the name and extension of the downloaded file, which should be "Installer OS X El Capitan.App" normally (or .dmg if it's a disk image).
