Choppy gradient

Hello,

I am a beginner on Illustrator and I am learning by watching tutorial videos on YouTube. Right now I'm trying to create a gradient text that goes from black to transparent using the gradient tool, but the gradient is choppy and it's not even a gradient anymore since there is less and less color each time I reduce the distance... Does anyone have any idea where this might be coming from or what I might be doing wrong? I would like to create a long shadow from black to transparent. I am adding a screenshot of my Illustrator workspace.

you need to set the distance to a minimum (I think 0.04)

Hello,

I think the best approach is to use "steps" instead of "distances" (to click in the dropdown menu where "distance" is currently used in your image). So, increase the number of steps until the result satisfies you. Regarding the color, either use the Pathfinder tool to remove the orange background under the gradient AI or apply white color to the AI in the foreground (since having a transparent AI in the foreground won't be very useful, as the shape won't be distinguishable).
