Hello everyone, I recently bought a Logitech 5.1 sound system (Z-5500). However, I'm having some issues connecting it to my laptop so that the sound comes from all 5 speakers. There are three jacks (black, yellow, green) for one output on my laptop, so either only the 2 rear speakers or the 2 front speakers work in 6-channel mode, or the 3 front speakers work in Dolby 2 mode. Is there a cable that can be plugged into the computer's jack and split into three so that all the speakers function correctly?
Thanks in advance, because having 3 speakers is wonderful, the sound is perfect!!!

I encountered a similar problem and that's why I opted for the Z-5400 for my part: the digital decoder!
Your sound card needs to support SPDIF output, which should be the case if your laptop isn't too old.
The cable you need is an optical "toslink/tosllink" cable used to connect audio devices via fiber optic, as well as a "male toslink / 3.5mm optical jack" adapter. You can easily find this kind of product online, but if you have a specialized store for connectivity, it will probably be cheaper (I found everything for €1.5 at a wholesaler, for my part).
From that moment on, you'll finally be able to enjoy your DTS sound on the speakers, which is much better than with the classic jacks since the sound is sent digitally to the speakers, which decode the information, giving you a much cleaner crystal-clear sound, a delight.
You may also encounter some issues using 5.1, especially with movies. I don't know about Linux, but on Windows, the system manages the SPDIF output poorly and you have to force DTS support (so that the sound card sends the DTS stream and not some fake stereo sound). We use AC3 Filter for this purpose; I explained everything on my blog when I finally found the solution (http://kookyoo.net/?page=blog&blog=1&billet=458).
There you go, I hope I've provided a concrete answer to your question, good luck and enjoy your sound, it's an excellent choice ;) -
Thank you for the information! I have a Fnac store near me and I just saw this cable that splits into three, I think I will find what I'm looking for, I'll send you the link and you can tell me what you think. Thank you very much!!!

Let me know what you think!!! -
I have no idea how this cable works, but I think it's a model specific to Archos. In any case, it won't produce any digital sound.
It's rather the type of cables I was talking about:
http://www4.fnac.com/shelf/article.aspx?PRID=1467611&SID=3025f671-a3ed-50e9-923b-4b07a7384b4a&UID=06046E042-00C0-4A5A-BDA0-B1B1845C3A68&Origin=fnac_google_home&OrderInSession=0&TTL=160320080916&NID=8000022&RNID=-50
And you'll need to add a toslink > jack adapter. But make sure first that your PC supports SPIF output (if it's listed in the volume settings, it should be the case)

Hi, the problem is that I don't think I have that square output on my laptop, that's why I thought about getting a jack adapter with my only RCA output. I'll check directly at the store, but I think that's what I need. I think as soon as the 3 jack cables are connected, everything should work. For now, only one cable can be connected without the adapter, don't you think?
Well, I'm going back to class, thanks again!!! -
No, that’s why you need a 3.5 mm jack > Toslink adapter. On a laptop, you don’t have Toslink but often an optical output 'hidden' at the back of the jack. If you connect an optical fiber (with the adapter I mentioned), you’ll see the red light at the end. Check your PC; if you connect with your jack/RCA cable, you probably won't have digital and 3D sound.
Make sure to specify that this is what you need to the seller, to avoid disappointment.
Basically, the only solution in my opinion: Laptop > Jack / Toslink > Toslink / Toslink > Optical input 1 or 2 of your speaker enclosure.

Hi, I went to the seller and he told me that with a laptop I couldn't get 5.1 sound, so I gave up on it. But when I got home, I reread the manual, and after some adjustments, I managed to put the digital remote in stereo mode 1-3, and plug in the black wire in stereo and set the dolby music mode, I think; and then, miracle, the 5 speakers are working and the subwoofer!!! Of course, I don't think I can get 3D sound in movies and games, but what I simply want is to listen to music with good sound, so I'm not disappointed!!! If someday I buy a DVD player, there will be 5.1 sound, that will be fine, but for music, I'm already satisfied :-)
Do you see what I mean about the setup?
Thanks again -
You can have 3D sound on a laptop if it supports it. I have a 14' laptop with an Intel HDA sound chipset, which is quite standard. However, in the sound settings, I have the SPDIF output (or digital audio output). Could you provide us with the references of your machine, so we can check if that’s the case?
At home, I use stereo for music, since sources are usually on 2 channels, but with a good DVD or a game with 3D sound, it would be a shame not to take advantage of Dolby.

Hi everyone! So, I'm really satisfied with the sound, I managed to get all the satellites working just with one wire (1-3 channel mode) and wired connection in music mode (2 black wire)
However, the music was playing, I turned off the computer and when I turned it back on, the digital remote was no longer powered, even the subwoofer was on, and it’s only been a week! I wonder if it's the fuse... it's whitish in color, and I hadn't looked at the color before, so should I change it? Should I put in a stronger one? I don’t think the system is dead, it’s brand new and I haven’t done anything special
Thanks in advance!!!-
Hi Pascalou, the same thing happened to me! The fuse is a ceramic fuse, if it's white it means it hasn't blown.
Take it back to the store where you bought it and they should normally repair it since it’s new. Mine was repaired; diagnosis: subwoofer power supply DEAD! Plus, I had only used it for 6 hours... So go see the customer service of the place that sold it to you and they should normally fix it for you ;)
Good luck to you
P.S.: They are great speakers, the 500 watts are all there, but the subwoofer power supply tends to blow. We're not the only ones saying this, it’s probably a series issue...

Hello;
I would like to buy the Logitech Z 5500, but I don't know if I can connect the cables to my laptop. For your information, my laptop is an Acer Aspire 9420 with the new operating system Windows Vista. So if someone knows if I can connect the cables, even like Pascal, that wouldn't bother me. Please let me know.
If there are any spelling mistakes, I'm sorry. -
Hello!
I have the same problem as Pascal; I bought Logitech X530 5.1 speakers... and just like him, my laptop only has one output (the one where the headphones are plugged in, by the way!!)!!!! If Pascal could send me a link to the cable that saved his life, that would be nice!!! Because for the moment the speakers are just staring at me and it's killing me!!! lol!! Thanks in advance! -
You need to get yourself a USB sound card. I have a Creative External Live 24 bit USB. There you'll see that you have the inputs for the 3 cables. It's absolutely useless to buy 5.1 speakers if you only connect one cable to the computer. You might as well buy speakers for 12 euros...
If you buy this sound card, you'll also get all the cables: coaxial, SPDIF...
Once purchased, you can connect the 3 cables to your sound card and then you will have 5.1. If you want to have Dolby or DTS, you'll need to connect your speakers to the sound card with the optical cable (SPDIF) provided with the card.
Apparently, you bought 5.1 speakers without even knowing anything... I know it's a bit tough. It took me 3 months to figure everything out with my Z5500. And believe me, when you watch a DVD in DTS, you forget about the cinema... -
Hello, I have three audio outputs on the front of my laptop, a Fujitsu Amilo XA1526. I bought Z 5500 speakers that I haven't received yet. Can you confirm that it will work in 5.1 without any issues? Thank you!
-
Here I am again :-) Well, my computer is an HP Pavilion dv5245ea and it seems that the SPDIF output is available.
If I buy the cable above, I just need to plug it into my computer and connect it to the remote control and my sound will be in 3D, I suppose. Because right now, I'm using a 3.5mm cable to connect my computer to the remote control and I have to set it to p2 music mode for all 5 speakers to work!
Thank you in advance.
P.S. Can this kind of cable be found at Auchan or other large stores? -
Hello everyone, I think the problem is going to be solved :-) I bought a coaxial cable and ordered a Terratec Aureon MK2 5.1 USB sound card. Then I will be able to fully enjoy my system.
Thanks again for your help. If anyone already has this card, what do you think about it? -
For everyone who has a laptop and wants to have 5.1 sound, unless they have a 5.1 output, the only way is to buy an external USB 5.1 sound card.
It allows you to 'convert' the 3.1 sound that your computer provides into 5.1 sound, with a 5-output sound system.
If you have a good 5.1 sound system, it's better to buy a sound card that matches what you have and that allows you to maintain the good quality of sound emitted.
Have a nice day everyone.-
Here I am again, even though it's been a long time since I last visited the forum...
I bought a Terratec Aureon MK2 5.1 USB sound card this summer, with an optical cable for digital sound, and I must say that the sound is much better ;) But the main advantage of optical compared to analog is that 1 cable is enough instead of 3 :d
That's it, see you later and thanks for the info ;)

Hello, I'm a complete novice in audio systems, and on a whim, I got the Z-5500... To be honest, I regret it... So to console myself, I would like you to virtually help me connect the Z-5500 to my laptop (recent: just 6 months old). Thank you for getting back to me (just to lift my spirits at least, please...). Hope to hear from you soon...

Hello everyone, I bought the HP DV7 3165 EF laptop which has an SPDIF (digital) output, and I have also had the Z-5500 for a year. I can't get any sound from my sound card via SPDIF!!! However, I bought an optical / toslink 3.5mm jack cable and a jack / coaxial cable. None of them work. I was wondering if, indeed it has an optical output, there should be a red light coming from the jack, right? Or is it simply not on? Help me out because I've spent over 35€ on cables, 1000€ on the laptop, and 250€ on the sound system LOL. (The sound card is integrated, so I don't know the model, but the brand is Altec, I believe.) Thanks in advance!
-
I'm asking myself the exact same question as you because I don't see any red light on the horizon of my two front jack ports when I switch to SPDIF mode! O_o However, this option seems to be present in the audio menu of Windows 7...

Hello!
So you're saying that if I buy a Logitech Z 5500 system and connect it to my (laptop) PC, I need to buy a 5.1 sound card to get all the speakers working!?
Because in a little while, I want to buy a Z 5500, and I have a LAPTOP
that only has one output, and it's the headphone jack!!!
