Hello,
I would like to know if my motherboard can support DDR4 RAM? My PC has a single channel RAM stick of 8.0 GB DDR3 (normally DDR3-L as it runs on 1.35V according to CPU-Z)
If my motherboard is compatible with DDR4, I would like to install 2 sticks in order to switch to dual channel. The only thing I know is that my motherboard supports a maximum of 16 GB of RAM, but I haven't found any information on other sites, and Médion does not provide information on its motherboard, which is a bit annoying. I've seen another forum with someone who has the same motherboard but couldn't find any information either. I'm turning to you; do you have any idea?

no, your motherboard can only handle one type of RAM. It only supports DDR3(L). -
Ok, so in terms of performance, does DDR3(L) limit me or not? Is it still interesting to go for dual-channel?

- a mainstream platform: the LGA1150 with Haswell processors with 2 cores (Celeron/Pentium/Core i3) and 4 cores (Core i5/Core i7) supporting only DDR3
- a high-end platform: the LGA2011-V3 with Haswell-E processors with 6 or 8 cores (Core i7) supporting DDR4
Note that the LGA1150 will be replaced in the coming months (likely by the end of summer/start of school) by the LGA1151 with Skylake processors with 4 cores (and later 2 cores) supporting DDR4 (and DDR3L).

So theoretically, is my motherboard compatible with DDR4? I wouldn't be surprised since with DDR3L we're at 1.35V and for DDR4 it's the same or 1.2V it seems. And I think it's surprising that with my GeForce GTX 960, which can be overclocked and is SLI compatible, if my motherboard isn’t compatible with DDR4 (by the way: I didn't build my computer; I bought it pre-built, with Windows 10 installed), I don't know what to think anymore."-
DDR3(L) is different from DDR4 in terms of physical characteristics; there are not the same number of pins, and the notch is not in the same place, so they are not compatible at all. You cannot install DDR3 in a DDR4 slot, nor DDR4 in a DDR3 slot.
A processor may be compatible with both DDR3 and DDR4, but it is the motherboard that primarily defines this compatibility.
Furthermore, SLI has nothing to do with RAM; again, it depends on the graphics card and the motherboard.
As for dual-channel, yes, you can do it, although generally, RAM is added when there is not enough, not to speed up the PC; for that, it's better to replace the HDD with an SSD, but it's more complicated to do. -

However, I don't think I want to change my hard drive since my hard drive is an SSHD (hybrid, a mix of HDD and SSD that allows for almost the equivalent advantages of SSD speed while providing a large amount of storage like HDDs, all at a reasonable price). What I can't understand is why Medion, knowing that the LGA 1151 socket could support DDR4 RAM, installed DDR3 (DDR3(L) SDRAM) slots, especially with the i5-6400 Skylake processor in the computer, which also supports DDR4, to offer lower, more attractive prices? My question now is: should I change the motherboard to be able to use DDR4 in dual-channel while keeping my processor if it is supposedly compatible, and later see if I need to change the SSHD to put in an SSD or use my SSHD as a secondary drive? What I would like to do afterward is to change the graphics card, and if I do, I want to be up to date with today's technologies and ensure that my PC is compatible for future upgrades (future graphics card, processor, etc.)
Finally, to be clearer, I don't understand the manufacturer, who knows that the socket is compatible with a newer generation of more efficient RAM, yet stuck with DDR3(L) slots. -
I don't know why they didn't use DDR4.
The SSHD is a hybrid, but in terms of performance, it’s nothing compared to an SSD; the SSD part of the SSHD is only about 8GB and is managed by the system, and basically, it just speeds up the boot process.
You don't need to change the motherboard to have dual channel; it's a synchronization between two RAM sticks (usually identical), you can do it with DDR3. If you want to do dual channel with DDR4, then yes, you'll need to change the motherboard.
To upgrade the processor to a newer one, you'll also need to change the motherboard. For the graphics card, it depends on the power supply and the desired graphics card. -
Yes, I can order another stick to enable dual channel in DDR3, I understand that well, but since my processor is compatible with DDR4, I might be tempted to change my motherboard so that it’s compatible with future major upgrades. Now I just need to know which motherboard is the most interesting.
I could keep the graphics card for now, and I will make sure to choose a compatible motherboard to connect 2 or 3 graphics cards in SLI or CFX, and in that case, later I would order another graphics card (I’m waiting to see the release of the RTX 2060 ^^). The power supply I have is a 450W bronze 80%, I think. I will wait to see the complete data sheet of the RTX before ordering a power supply, but I think I will need at least a 700W. Luckily, DDR4 only consumes 1.2V.
So, I will order a motherboard, 16GB DDR4, and see depending on the socket if I keep my processor, and then I will change the power supply, graphics card, and SSD in that case. By the way, what motherboard would you recommend? -
You cannot keep this processor if you want a motherboard that allows you to upgrade the processor (and for the upgrade to be truly useful, because it seems to me that there are motherboards compatible with Intel's 6th and 7th gen, but it's not worth the cost to upgrade from 6th to 7th gen).
The best upgrade configuration today is to switch to an AMD processor (and compatible motherboard) with AM4 socket Ryzen.
Then you can only do SLI with graphics cards that have the same GPU, and not all cards can do that (I would be surprised if it’s possible for the 2060 or maybe certain versions, we'll see). You absolutely cannot do SLI with a GTX960 and an RTX2060, and generally, the cost of SLI is more expensive than a better graphics card, for less performance (when you have to buy 2 graphics cards at once). SLI does not double performance, it's at most a 40% increase. Not to mention the cost of the SLI compatible motherboard.
No more than 550W power supply for the RTX2060 alone.
So basically, if you want an upgradable thing, you need to build a new PC.
