Startup disk repair

Solved

Hello,

I have an iMac (3.2 GHz Intel Core i5) from late 2012 running macOS Sierra that had issues with Finder constantly quitting.

I attempted an upgrade to Mojave which resolved the Finder problem.
However, the startup disk needs to be repaired from a recovery disk that I do not have (neither for Sierra nor Mojave).

I have just formatted (macOS Extended Journaled format) two external hard drives in succession in order to install Mojave on them. The installation software recognizes the disks in question but does not allow the installation on them.
Did I miss something?
Could you shed some light on this issue?
Are there other solutions to repair it in this case?

Thank you for your help.

I tried the operation twice without success: from the recovery partition, I get the same message as when I launch Disk Utility from my usual workspace.
"SOS has detected damage that needs to be repaired. To repair the startup volume, run SOS from the recovery disk."
