My received messages appear and then disappear. Solved

Question

Hello,   Following numerous checks, the installation of one of the latest versions of Thunderbird, and inquiries on forums, I am unable to retain incoming messages because after opening and closing the email client, they disappear, and the inbox remains empty. There is nothing in the archives.   However, when checking the site credentials, nothing indicates any message requesting deletion, except at my request, of course. However, sent messages are properly saved and remain there permanently.   Thank you for your suggestions,   Pégé

Hello,  Do you use the POP protocol or the IMAP protocol (recommended)?  Does Thunderbird manage multiple mailboxes? If so, is the issue common to all mailboxes?

Hi Piierr10,   The IMAP protocol, but possibly, what would the procedure be to change it to POP, because I've already thought about it, but can't find anything to do it.   And Thunderbird only manages its own.  Pégé

Good evening,  You have no interest in abandoning the IMAP protocol. Your emails are stored on your account host. They are therefore accessible from a tablet or smartphone and are not lost if your computer needs to be reset. With the POP protocol, messages are downloaded to your computer; they are only accessible on that computer and are lost in the event of a computer crash.  https://blog.provectio.fr/protocoles-de-messageries-smtp-pop-imap/  If you still wish to use the POP protocol, you will simply need to reconfigure Thunderbird. It’s not complicated.  So normally you should have a window like this:    All messages are accessible by clicking on Inbox (here Thunderbird indicates that 30 messages have not been read). And they remain accessible at any time even after being read.  Can you provide me with the settings for your incoming server? Go to the Tools tab, then Account Settings In the window that opens, click on Server Settings and note down: Server name: Port: Connection security: Authentication method:

Thank you Pierr10,  But that still doesn't give me the reason or a solution to fix my disappearing incoming messages issue... They are certainly somewhere and there must be a message (bug) causing this unwanted behavior, otherwise, there would be no reason to continue with Thunderbird, right...? And I can easily imagine that I'm not the only one having this kind of problem, and it seems there are numerous other bugs with this email client, I can't understand why, after version 58, there seem to be so many? Hi,  To simplify and be clearer. Can you tell us what your main email addresses are in TDB: Orange, Free, Gmail, La Poste, etc?? Each mail server may use a different protocol. So please provide a specific example

Hello,   Thank you both for your comments and suggestions. I will first try the Pop protocol, just to see, and for my other messaging services: Outlook, Gmail, Mailoo, and Protonmail, and the test messages on one or the other of these last ones obviously makes each of the messages appear quickly, so far, normal, I open them, then either they disappear immediately or when I open Thunderbird again, and then, either the last message is still there, then it disappears or it has already disappeared.   I checked again in Settings, and everything is normal, no request to delete messages, there is nothing in the archives, spam, etc.   So I am taking note of your suggestions and I will get back to you in a few days, as I might have to set aside the computer for outdoor activities. Hi everyone, I was about to put Resolved in the title of my messages, but I still question its relevance, and let me explain. Upon checking the procedure to install Thunderbird again, I noticed that I had entered an old email address from Hotmail that has been discontinued for a few years, which explains why I saw an incoming message that then disappeared, as it wasn't retained by my server. I then uninstalled Thunderbird and reinstalled version 52.8, and provided my current address from Outlook... and voila... incoming messages in abundance. So, my problem is solved, but upon reflection, I realize that what I am receiving now are only messages coming from my Outlook email, and that my Thunderbird is essentially just a clone of my Outlook, and not a new individual email account like xxx@Thunderbird.com... Am I right or wrong? Or as suggested in the installation procedure, should I create a new address under Gandi.net? And in this last scenario, why not have it be identical with the name Thunderbird, simply?  Pégé
