Hello, I just built a computer for a friend. He bought Windows Vista Ultimate. The beginning of the installation goes smoothly until I enter the CD key. Then it asks me to choose a partition to install the OS, I select it (250GB partition), and it keeps saying: "Windows was unable to determine whether this computer has a valid system volume."
What should I do? It's a SATA II hard drive; there shouldn't be a need for SATA drivers like there is for the installation of Windows XP, right?
Thank you for your response.

Hello,
when you boot from the Vista CD, you can choose the partition manager and create a partition for Vista and possibly a second partition for your data. Maybe then it will install without issue...

Hello, yes but that's already done, 2 partitions of 250GB...?
Thanks anyway
I'm going to try changing the cable (even though it is recognized without any problem)
Thanks anyway

Well, I think it's going to be tough to find the reason for the problem. Without another disk, I don't see how to proceed by elimination.
Is it recognized in the BIOS as master?

Good evening everyone, so the problem has been solved since last night! In fact, the HDD was set to master for booting, but in the hard drive priority menu, it was set to secondary. The one that was set to master was some USB thing.
So there you go, thank you anyway for your responses.
Have a good evening everyone!

I did what passoa992 said (thanks) and set my hard drive as the boot priority in the BIOS.
Then I installed (the device not recognized during the installation) with a USB key where I had put the RAID or SATA drivers for the motherboard (an Acer for me => go to Acer support) entering the "SATA RAID" folder on the USB key for example and next next next...

"Windows cannot find any system volume that complies with the installation criteria"
The common point among users' complaints is that one of the drives is connected via SATA. The issue is that Windows Vista must be installed on an active partition, and it appears unable to properly detect it if more than one disk is present in your machine. There are two solutions: Simply access your computer's BIOS and modify the boot sequence so that after the drive where the Windows Vista installation disc will be inserted, your hard drive is declared. Optionally, set the Try Other Boot Device or Boot Other Device option to Enabled or YES. Another suggestion: remove any USB drives from the boot sequence. Ideally, you should have something like this (or similar):
* 1st: CD/DVD DRIVE;
* 2nd: HARD DRIVE;
* 3rd: HARD DRIVE;
* Try Other Boot Device: YES.
Second possibility: In the BIOS, disable all other disks and declare your RAID disk as the first boot device. Once the installation is complete, re-enable the other disks in the BIOS as usual.

Hi,
I had the same problem, and since I couldn't find a solution, I went to see my buddy, for whom I'm going to do a little advertising since he helped me out right away:
http://www.easyassistancepc.com
What he did:
1/ deleted the volume to get a single RAW partition
2/ loaded the SATA drivers for my motherboard onto an external HDD
3/ changed the boot order
4/ installed the drivers
5/ installed Vista
He also did a few other things, but that's too technical for me. He told me it was for the machine, not for this problem.
So there you go,
another message confirming that it's indeed the booting from a HDD that isn't formatted correctly or that is in USB/FireWire that is at the root of this issue
