Hello :)
Contrary to what I had read, Free does indeed offer WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup according to Wikipedia) as an option for the Wi-Fi on the Freebox v6. It will be enabled by default on new Freeboxes according to this: https://alloforfait.fr/internet/news/44258-freebox-revolution-wifi-invite-wps.html
But I just learned that it might not be advisable to enable it. See here: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wi-Fi_Protected_Setup .
So I left it disabled on my current Freebox v6.
What do you think?

Hi,
it's brand new since the latest update.
It seems to me that activation is time-limited and requires pressing a button.
However, if you don't need it, you don't activate it; there's no point in using it every day.

What follows only engages me:
Brupala, fundamentally your reasoning is okay, but in form I don't agree with you:
We must take into consideration that currently the new features like WPS are completely new for Fbx.
WPS unfortunately poses a significant hacking risk if it remains enabled for too long
It should only be used for a few minutes, at most a quarter of an hour, before automatically disconnecting the WPS function
This is where I differ from Brupala (though his advice can no longer be called into question) I aim for security (I have 2 computer schools and a university of HT in my neighborhood. So twice a year, I experience "confusion attempts to breach my network."
WPS unfortunately, if sniffed, gives immediate access to your network, and a "crafty individual," just to annoy you... or simply to see how far he can go, won't have a problem since you have offered him the keys to your castle.
Generally, unless there is a deliberate modification by the user, WPS is programmed to last 5 to 7 minutes at most.
My tests (I reiterate: this only engages ME) show that WPS can remain open for more than 15 minutes)
For obvious reasons I won't provide further information here.
And we are in the BETA phase, so no worries...
No one learned to ride a bike BEFORE learning to walk.
But this is more than enough for WPS codes to be sniffed and used.
Etiabe,
if you are an individual:
It's up to you to assess the importance of your data.
If you are a PRO
in EURL in Associations or if your network serves your job even partially:
I suggest you stick to the old way: don’t use the WPS function.
Or at least proceed as follows:
One computer connected to Fbx
all others turned off and disconnected, so if you go to the Freebox OS as admin
you will find:
the control PC (the one managing the Fbx) AND NOTHING ELSE.
You activate WPS,
connect the PC, webcam, or whatever you want to connect via WPS
You pair it
you cut the connection of your control PC
check that your device is connected
you retrieve your control PC,
FROM IT
you turn off the WPS function
check that your device remains connected after the WPS disconnection
you reconnect your PCs, NAS webcams...
and normally from your control PC everything, including your device, is connected.
you restart your Fbx
check that your device is connected
and it’s finally done.
Finally almost (2):
DO NOT TRUST ANYONE
STARTING WITH YOURSELF
So, just because your device is connected on the Fbs OS connections table doesn't mean that your device is functional...
Or that no one else managed, simultaneously, due to bad luck, to sneak in and be invisible to you.
I ALWAYS RECOMMEND AFTER a WPS
to change ALL the codes...
to create a "technical" network that only serves WPS connections
a network that we "plant" afterwards
and that we delete from all PCs
Cheers
I said the same thing, it seems to me.
To summarize your long speech:
WPS is for lazy folks who can't be bothered... :-)
I’m not saying otherwise, far from it.
Unfortunately, some shortcuts only allow people with the same culture as you and me to understand each other. I doubt that someone who has never had to use a WPS, in their fifties, could understand the purpose of the WPS unless they just press a button instead of typing on a screen, and at that point, they will forget about the security that is so dear to us...
That said, your approach is absolutely correct.
