Hello,
I have an ASUS laptop, model X71Q, originally running Vista. I upgraded it to Windows 7 today, everything went well but upon restart, I was surprised to see a gray screen first, then a huge red message saying "ERROR: Can not open file c:\RECOVERY.DAT"
After some research (thanks Google ...) I found that it seems to be a "common" issue, apparently Asus is trying to boot from a partition it shouldn't ... Anyway, I didn't understand everything, but right now I don't have a Windows 7 DVD and I don't know what to do ... I tried to put WinRE (http://www.forum-vista.net/reparer-vista-avec-winre-279) on my USB key then pressed Esc at startup and chose my key but without success ... So if anyone could help me I would be very grateful :)
Best regards

You will face this big RED ERROR and "cannot open the file c:\recovery.dat" on the screen. To resolve the issue, after installation, do not let the system restart, you might just close the DOS window that says it will restart. Now insert your USB drive and install the EasyBCD program. Click on "Manage Bootloader," check the box "Reinstall Vista bootloader," and click "Write MBR."
Let's go, restart your system and forget about this ERROR message! The problem was with the MBR.
If it doesn't work, try this:
Follow the steps below after the error
Insert the Win 7 installation DVD and boot from the DVD drive. On some older systems, you will need to change the boot order via the system BIOS; most newer systems allow booting from DVD without changing the boot order by simply pressing any key when prompted.
class = stepBg itxtvisited = "1"> Step 2
Choose your "Language," "Time," and "Keyboard input" defaults on the first window and click Next.
class = stepBg itxtvisited = "1"> Step 3
You are now presented with 3 choices. Click on "Repair your computer" to access the system recovery window. Now choose "Command Prompt" to run the desired utility called "bootsect.exe." Now type in the prompt bootsect /nt60 ALL /mbr to repair all partitions. Eject the DVD and restart the computer. Your computer should now boot into Win 7 again.
PS use this at your own risk; it works well on my Asus X71Q
Let me know what's new. A+

Re :
I just created a bootable USB drive with my Windows 7 ISO, then at startup I changed the boot order so that my USB drive is first
so I got "Asus preload" that started and offers me three options:
- recover windows to first partition only
- recover windows to entire HD
- recover windows to entire HD with 2 partitions
Which one should I choose???

I SOLVED MY PROBLEM !! (PHEW)
For those who might have the same issue, here's a recap:
- I upgraded my PC from Vista to Seven with a downloaded version, so without a DVD. Fortunately, I had copied the ISO file onto a USB stick.
- Upon rebooting, I see the error message.
- I then used "ISO to USB" (a free software) to make my USB stick bootable with my Windows 7 ISO.
- I plugged my USB stick into the PC and then started it by pressing the F2 key to access the BIOS. There, I changed the order so that my USB stick would load first (and the PC would boot from it).
- I then pressed F10 to save and exit, and I let the PC boot.
- At that point, Asus Preload launched and offered me three choices ("restore to the first partition," "restore the entire hard drive," "restore in two partitions" (it was written in English so approximate translation).
- I chose the second option and let it run, then the Windows 7 installation program started, asked me for my country, my language, a username... Then the PC booted smoothly under Seven.
However, I lost my personal files, but since I had just bought this PC, there was hardly anything. And my PC is back under Vista, I think I'll give up on Seven given the mishap I just had, haha...
Hoping to help someone :)
