Hello,
I am aware of tools like Engauge Digitizer, GraphClick, Graph Extract, etc., which allow for data extraction from an image. That's not what I'm looking for. I produce a curve with a mathematical software to use it as a graphic element in Word or OpenOffice. The problem is that the curve always comes out on a white background, which makes it difficult to use as a simple curve. The issues of foreground and background pertain to the curve ... and the white background. What I would like is to obtain a curve like those drawn freehand in Word or OpenOffice: the graphic object is just the curve without the background. Is there anything that does that?
Thank you.

Your problem is that Word does not recognize transparencies...
To ensure that an object or an image has no background in Word, you mainly have 2 possibilities:
Either you import an image and use Word's transparency tool to remove the white background. This works well for a contrasting image on its background because the method is quite basic.
Or you save it in a format that Word recognizes for vector clipping masks, such as WMF or EMF. This implies that the software you use to create your drawing or image is capable of generating a clipping mask or a vector shape.
And the 3rd solution is the TIF 1 bit format.
