Source and target file names are identical

Hello,
I regularly back up files from my computer to my Samsung external hard drive.
This morning, I wanted to back up 2 files and I got the message "unable to copy, the source file and the target file are identical."
After several attempts, I checked the size of my folders and it is the same on my computer and on my external hard drive. It's as if my documents had transferred themselves automatically to my external hard drive!!!
Do you have any idea what could have happened?
I have an old computer running XP and I back up regularly because my computer could crash at any moment!
