Hello,

Can we overclock an Intel Core i5 from the 7th generation?
The processor in question is an i5-7300HQ clocked at 2.5 GHz.

Best regards

ok thanks for the reply... my PC equipped with the n3540 does not allow overclocking via the BIOS because the overclocking options are not there... However, could I flash the BIOS of the HP Omen equipped with the i5-7300hq to unlock these overclocking options?

      Is it a laptop?

    Hello!

First of all, it's an i7-4700HQ, not an i5.
To overclock it (because yes, I had this processor three years ago), I couldn't go through the BIOS either, as it didn't offer any overclocking options.
And there was no available flash enabling all that. There were a few threads online sharing one or two tweaked BIOS versions, but... too technical and too risky. Not that I couldn't do it, but the slightest mistake would have turned my G750JH into a 4.5 kg paperweight --'

However, I was using Intel Xtreme Tuning Utility (Intel XTU). It's software that allows for overclocking without going through the BIOS. Everything is more or less modifiable, but the dangers are the same.
Anyway, I had some grayed-out options (Base clock for example) because they were locked by the BIOS. Yes: your BIOS can either provide options for OC or... prevent OC. It's a bit annoying, I admit.

It allowed me to gain... 200 MHz (thus going from 3.4 GHz to 3.6 GHz), but I also saw an increase in temperature. The already extreme cooling (for a laptop, let's put it in perspective) was no longer sufficient to keep the processor below 85° under load (SpeedFan for temperature monitoring), I needed a cooling pad.

We'll see. I don't have any other leads to suggest.

Keep me posted if you manage to gain a few MHz ;-)

    Have a nice day

    Hi,

It's a laptop CPU, and the laptop's BIOS probably doesn't allow for overclocking.

Yeah, okay, but the i5-4700HQ can do it, so I wonder if the i5-7300HQ can do it too...
    and the Pentium N3540?

It depends on the PC's BIOS.

    I wouldn't recommend it, but I don't think it's done anyway.

A laptop is a laptop, and as it is, it's meant to stay that way.

If you want a "Performance" PC, buy a tower with separate "Performance" parts.
