How to Print Your Own Newspaper?

Hello!

I am planning to create a retro/old-style paper newspaper (like the old French press newspapers, for example) but I am facing several issues:

- Printing double-sided on plain A4 paper (with a weight of about 70g) doesn't give me the result I want because it's see-through, especially when I print images, unlike real newsprint (Le Monde, Ouest France, etc)

Is there a suitable paper for this kind of use? (I haven't found anything in my research)

And another question: I wanted to go for an A3 format for my newspaper, but the problem is I have an A4 printer. Can I print in A3 on an A4 printer, or do I need to use a larger printer? Also, is there a cost-effective solution to print my newspaper? (I'm not looking for ultra-professional quality)

Hello,

This morning I did some shopping at Bureau Vallée. And there, I saw that they do photocopying and printing in several formats:
A4, A3, A0 (and two other types of formats).
Their machine is quite large (in size!).

So, if you find a store of this brand in your city, or any other type of office supply store, you would have the possibility to print your newspaper in A3 format.

(You should also imagine that I thought about your problem when I saw the printer!).

Moreover, you wouldn't have the issue of buying A3 paper since it would be provided with the printing (I suppose!).

Hello.

It's very easy to answer you: It's NO everywhere!

1) The only suitable paper is precisely newsprint, packaged in rolls of 500 to 600 kg.

2) As their name indicates, A4 printers can print at most on A4 sheets,

and A3 printers can print at most on A3 sheets; it's mechanical!

3) A not very expensive newspaper? Even high-circulation newspapers, which readers buy, and that receive significant amounts from advertising, are struggling to survive... So you'll find that it'll always be too expensive, in your eyes, after two or three issues.

And what if I used a paper with a higher weight than 70g?

Yes, but I thought that by folding an A3 sheet in half it would be doable! ^^

I only do one edition (in 50 to 100 copies at most).

Hello,

Perhaps we should launch a fundraising appeal online (for people who might be interested in your newspaper), and with the money raised, ask a small printing house if they would agree to print your newspaper (on newsprint).

I have no idea if this is possible or not, but as long as we haven't tried, we can't say "impossible"!

It's a good idea but it might be complicated because it's a volunteer job for a primary school. I'll try to talk to the principal about it.

I think I'm going to buy A3 paper to do the test!

A3 sheets, regardless of their weight, will crumple in the printer and cause paper jams.
But you can give it a try ...

The solution is to borrow, rent, or buy an A3 printer.
Indeed, you can't even create your document with your word processor if the computer is not connected to an A3 printer ...

Hello again!

I tested printing with 100g A3 paper:

I had paper jams when I tried to print on a folded A3 sheet.

The print quality is quite good when printing images on both sides of the sheet, but we really lose some rigidity with this 100g format.

I asked specialized companies:

It costs me 5 euros per print for each newspaper (4-6 pages in A3 format), and about 150 euros on average for 50 copies. I'm probably going to do the printing myself by borrowing an A3 printer and stapling by hand (it's supposed to have an old-fashioned style after all ^^)

I found a Bureau Vallée in my city but I haven't had the chance to go there yet!

I also noticed a problem during printing: I have a white border on the sheet, which is annoying because I'm using an old newspaper style texture on the sheet.

If anyone knows how to solve these issues, they are welcome.

2) It's not easy to find a 3D printer to borrow... And stapling will require a long-arm stapler.

3) The white border is inevitable.

That's why it's advised not to use colored backgrounds.
There are also professional printers called "borderless" that print the entire surface of the sheet. That's another expense to add to your quote... Besides, your beautiful texture will already consume a lot of ink!

Retirement is nice! Especially in the Antilles... :-)

Otherwise, for printing on traditional newsprint, there are a few services that allow for small print runs at a reasonable cost. After a quick search, I found two sites that offer "digital printing," which allows you to print a few copies without the costs of offset printing, in a real newspaper format.

It costs around €150 for 50 copies of 12 pages.
