Hello,
I would like to refresh my old PC. Currently, I have an Intel Pentium G850 (dual-core 2.9GHz) with an Asus P8H61-M LX motherboard.
I would like to switch to a quad-core or a significantly more powerful dual-core. How can I find out which processors are compatible?

Hello,
I'm afraid you'll also need to change the motherboard and the memory.
In fact, your motherboard has a 1155 socket (the processor support) and there are no longer any processors available for this type of board.
As an example (since it is no longer being sold... or only second-hand), you would have needed this type of CPU... which is no longer for sale
https://www.amazon.fr/Intel-Processeur-LGA1155-Socket-Version/dp/B004FA8NX2 .
Otherwise, opt for an upgrade kit like this one:
https://www.ldlc.com/fiche/PB00198204.html .
For the price, you get the processor, the motherboard, and the memory.
Don't forget to mark your post "resolved" once the issue is fixed. Thank you.

I have a few used processors in mind (like an I5 3570 for under 150€), I don't have 300€ to spend on this ^^ hence my question ^^

PS: I have a 500W power supply, could that be an issue?

Negative, this motherboard only supports 2ND GENERATION processors (those that start with the number 2
example: I5 2500 = ok
example: I5 3500 = not possible
example: I5 4500 = not possible

Otherwise, the diet will be suitable... if you find a 2nd generation processor.

I correct myself, I hadn't seen Marcmarais's response.. which I greet... so do what he says.. update your BIOS for the 3rd generation processors.

Hello,

ouch!
there are no more new CPU socket 1155 (or at crazy prices), so only the second-hand market is left (with the risks that come with it)

otherwise, the good solution is indeed to go for an upgrade kit
But personally, I would either go for an Intel CPU, like here,
or with AMD, I would wait for the release of the new Ryzen CPUs in AM4 socket, scheduled for early March:
https://www.tomshardware.fr/les-17-processeurs-amd-ryzen-devoiles-en-details-lancement-le-2-mars/
because it would be silly to end up with a platform at the end of its life, just after buying it^^

PS 1: I don't have 300 euros to spend on this
oh well, then go for second-hand^^
here are the CPUs supported by your motherboard, along with the BIOS version:
https://dlcdnwebsites.asus.com/maintain/web/500.html
the i5-3570 requires BIOS 4104 (or higher)

PS 2: I have a 500W power supply, could that cause a problem?
no, if it's a good brand, but it mainly depends on your graphics card, which we don't know^^
