Group two text fields in Pivot Table

Hello,

I am doing statistics using a Pivot Table (Excel 2010) and I am stuck at this point:

For example, each row in the data table concerns a couple (2 people). Some data is valid for the couple, while others are by person, resulting in the data table having two columns for the same type of information (e.g., payment P1 and payment P2; age P1 and P2; etc.). Some information is in text form (e.g., city P1 and city P2, with choices between Paris, Marseille, Lyon, and Bordeaux).

My problem: I would like to be able to generate general statistics regarding the city (how many inhabitants in Paris, Marseille, etc., all people combined) in other words, to be able to group the data from the 'city P1' and 'city P2' fields into a single 'city' field in order to perform calculations and statistics from this data.

The 'group' or 'calculated field' functions work with numerical data, but I can't manage to do it with text data: I would like to know how to do it, if possible...

Thank you in advance!

Hello

Group them at the source in a new column by concatenating the cities and point to this new field in the pivot table

if I understood correctly...
