Toshiba hard drive locked by password

I retrieved a Toshiba hard drive in good condition and functional but locked with a password that I do not have, so I don’t know how to proceed to be able to use it. Therefore, I am asking for your help. Thank you.

When does the password appear?
Is the drive external or internal?
Laptop or desktop?

if you don't have the password, forget any idea of bypassing it.
The hard drives are very well protected, fortunately...
