Acer laptop keyboard + touchpad not responding anymore

Question

Hello,I have an ACER Aspire 5100 laptop, and for the past few days, the keyboard and touchpad haven't been responding. It starts up correctly, but it's impossible to enter the BIOS mode using the F2 key since the keyboard isn't working. Similarly, I can't get to the desktop because my computer is password protected, and given that the keyboard doesn't function... I tried removing the battery and restarting, but it didn't change anything. I took it out for a night, and nothing has improved.Thank you in advance for your advice.

I confirm. Same problem yesterday. Reboot, clean reinstall but no keyboard or touchpad, WIFI dead and front buttons off. When I removed the battery, everything went back to normal. It's the battery (2 and a half years) Thank you Acer.

Hello Use an external keyboard to enter the BIOS and load the default settings, save and exit. If the problem persists, try to update the BIOS. Otherwise, remove the keyboard and check its connection as well as the touchpad.

I tried to connect a USB keyboard but it isn't being recognized. I then disassembled the PC keyboard and the cable was properly connected. I tried another laptop keyboard but still no response. I can't access the BIOS since the keyboard isn't responding at all. Do you think it could be the USB controller that has failed or has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

Hi Try disconnecting the laptop keyboard and also, if possible, the ribbon cable of the touchpad that goes to the motherboard, then connect the USB keyboard and try. Good luck.

I really don't want to turn to Acer's customer service given the negative reviews I've seen on other forums, even though honestly I think I'm going to have to face it because I've tried several things and the computer doesn't care much... I unplugged the keyboard ribbon but it still doesn't recognize a USB keyboard... I haven't unplugged the touch pad ribbon. But the PC's keyboard and touch pad don't work together, so I don't understand why neither works at all at the same time... Could they be powered by the USB bus and the USB bus has failed? When I plug in a USB mouse, it lights up, and it powers on fine but it isn't recognized. And since there is a password on the PC, I can't access the desktop because maybe if it logged into the desktop, it would show me some kind of problem... Finally, a lot of maybes... This is the third time this has happened, and the previous two times everything fixed itself; when I powered on my PC, I had access to the BIOS and everything worked again... but this time it's been three weeks and nothing changes. I read on another forum that someone had the same problem but they concluded that it only occurred when they downloaded or uploaded files larger than 10 MB on a download platform... or that it might come from the Wi-Fi card inside the PC, but they offered no solution. So, I removed the internal Wi-Fi card to see if it brought about any changes, but no, none. Could this have any relation to it even though honestly I don't see the connection...

Same problem with my ACER Aspire 5100 .... I had a screen of all colors (crash under Windows), so I rebooted... And there, black screen for 5-6 reboots and finally it restarted. Then the same, crashes, rebooting and then a screen appears saying that the original BIOS has been restored, asking me to press F1 or F2 and there, nothing to do..... I think it must have crashed. And now when I reboot, the mouse and touchpad no longer work. I also tried plugging in a USB mouse but I feel like no USB port is functioning ...  I saw a procedure saying to disconnect the power supply, remove the battery and then press the power button... but it doesn't work ...  Is there a procedure to reset the BIOS?

Hi,  my touchpad isn't working and neither is the keyboard, but it works via USB!!  But this is very strange!!! Indeed, when I disconnect my laptop's battery and it’s plugged in, there’s no problem!!!!!  Weird?  Try it!

Good evening, I have the same problem on my side with a Travelmate 2310. I managed to connect a USB mouse, and it works. In the BIOS, the keyboard works, but under Windows, it lags. In my opinion, I think that the keyboard and the touchpad do not start at the same time as Windows because after a long wait with the USB mouse and the virtual keyboard, everything works again. I reinstalled Windows, and the problem disappears for a few weeks, but it always comes back!

Good evening,  As for me, I just ran into this problem, namely that the keyboard + touchpad are no longer responding. After a quick search, and after reading some posts, I tried, as someone suggested, to disconnect the battery and turn on the laptop.  Indeed, no more problems!! It seems that the issue comes from the battery (or maybe from a component of the laptop related to the battery). Moreover, my battery, which used to last about 1.5 to 2 hours when new, now only lasts 20 minutes, and it's degrading even more over time. I have every reason to believe that it is indeed the battery.  €87 (as of 12-02-08) for a battery for the Aspire 5672 on the Duracell website. I don't find that too expensive considering the prices of other brands. So I will get one and keep you informed.  Regarding the debate: Acer: Good/Not good? I simply want to say that Acer is a brand that can make both very bad and very good products. As an IT professional, I have been able to test different ACER laptops:  Conclusion (which is just my opinion): I advise avoiding Acer for FAMILY laptops and desktops, BUT I recommend their PROFESSIONAL range, which is of VERY good quality with a good price/quality ratio. For other brands of laptops, prefer Dell, Lenovo, Asus, Toshiba (in order of preference :D )  Have a good evening everyone.

Good evening, I own an Acer 2310 laptop and I had the same problem, namely that the keyboard and the mouse stopped responding when the battery was connected to the device. When the symptoms appeared, the battery lasted only about fifteen minutes at best. I solved this problem by replacing the original battery with a new one that I found on eBay for 50 euros. Additionally, the new battery is 4000 mAh compared to 2000 mAh for the original one. I have therefore doubled my laptop's battery life for a price that seems reasonable to me. Have a nice evening.

Hello,  Following the message I posted (just a little higher up), I want to inform you that I also solved the problem with my Acer Aspire 5672 by replacing the battery. I found a new battery on the site 100000volts.com (French site). Ordered on Tuesday the 12th, received on Friday the 15th. Let’s just say it was very fast for a private seller. I confirm no more pad and keyboard = Dead battery, so it needs to be replaced (thanks ACER 2 YEARS ASPIRE 1640WLMi) WARNING: only when everything works does this problem occur, meaning no sound or display issues (graphics card), booting up and arriving at the DESKTOP  PS: what happened to me, the formatting went badly, it stopped 5 minutes before the end and took very long to start up displaying icons in the taskbar took a long time to appear, etc. So for now, without the battery, it works but too slowly. I will reformat with an optimized XP PRO SP2 and see what happens next, I will come back to the forum for updates (I do not rule out a motherboard failure; there are special cards for troubleshooting portable and desktop PCs) see you soon

Hello...  I have the same problem with an "ACER TravelMate 4060"...  I tried to find a solution but :(  First of all, this problem started when I installed XP, and just when it indicates that there are 33 minutes left (the touchpad and keyboard stop responding), I have to continue with a USB mouse and keyboard (just during the setup stage and after I enter the serial number, everything works again)...  Then I noticed that the problem occurred just after installing drivers (I restart my laptop and boom :|)  The surprising thing is that after another format, everything was fine and it worked; I turned off Windows and after 2 days I started it again, and the problem returned.  One thing to note is that when we start in safe mode, it works well...  For those who say that the problem is with the battery, does the PC start on AC power when we boot in safe mode?????

Hello, I've had exactly the same problem for the past 30 minutes; the keyboard and touchpad are no longer responding, and I can't access the BIOS or change the OS in GRUB, not even the Caps Lock light works. Of course, my laptop has been out of warranty since November 2007. Have you found a solution? For me, disconnecting the battery doesn't make a difference, as the failure occurred while it was plugged into the power without the battery. Has anyone tried to contact ACER or an association? I should note that I own an Aspire 3100.

Hi I also have the same problem with the ACER TravelMate 4060 At one startup, the keyboard and mouse work correctly, at another startup they do not work, but in safe mode they start working correctly, which makes me think it's not a hardware issue. So I reinstalled the operating system and the drivers, and for a period of two days, I no longer had this problem, but then it came back, so I think it might be a virus.

I also have this keyboard and touchpad issue not responding for an ACER series 3000. I indeed think there is a connection with the battery because after taking it to a repairman it worked perfectly again after a total reboot but after an hour of use it was down again. I let the battery discharge and finally it started working again. The next day, the same thing happened, no keyboard and touchpad, as well as all the front keys and USB ports. I removed the battery and waited, but nothing changed. However, by letting the battery completely discharge, it works fine again. Can someone confirm that with a new battery everything will really be okay????  Thank you

Hello,  The problem could potentially stem from the operating system's inability to manage the battery via Microsoft's ACPI control method. I disabled this function, and the system rebooted normally on battery, mouse and keyboard working fine.  To be continued ...  Control panel>system>device manager>battery> right-click on Microsoft ACPI, check 'Disabled' (deactivated)

I had the same experience after a year and fifteen days of use, so Acer did not want to honor the warranty. I turned to an online laptop repair shop and brought them my PC to be fixed. It’s the motherboard, a recurring issue with Acer. They gave me an estimate of 299 euros but they usually manage to repair this type of incident 80% of the time, so they couldn't fix mine and refunded me 270 euros. I think this small business is serious and you should definitely contact them.

Hello,
I had the same problem with an ACER Aspire 5670, and no matter how much I reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP, nothing worked.
I read various messages and saw that by holding down the power button for 15 seconds, it would unlock the situation.
It partly worked because the keyboard and touchpad responded again, but very slowly.
I also saw that we could restart in safe mode, so I checked and modified the power settings, then restarted, and oh miracle, it works again.
However, the battery is at 2% and charges very slowly; I think the problem is due to battery fatigue.
I also read that if the battery doesn't rise above 5%, then it needs to be replaced.

I had just tested the wifi for the first time since purchasing it over a year ago (which worked during the test).

Thanks to the forum: starting with FN + f7 ==> allowed me to access safe mode and the keyboard and mouse!

ATTENTION: I had the same problem as most of you with my ACER 5672wlmi: impossible to start normally with the battery, everything would freeze... However, everything worked normally on AC power! I then decided to buy a new battery, and everything started working normally again... But it only lasted 2-3 months... and my new battery is dead again...! I think there's a problem with the power management of the laptop, which ends up draining the battery... If someone has a solution... I can't change batteries every 3 months...

I fixed a keyboard and mouse issue on the Aspire 7741Z, and after several hours of research, I found the problem. I just had to uninstall McAfee. I guess they included a bug in it, and if you don't activate it, you're in trouble.

Then in September 2016 I bought another Acer... and this morning the keyboard stopped working again!!

Furious, I looked at the forums and after reading this topic I removed the battery from my two faulty Acer laptops and put it back in, and surprise, both keyboards started working again... basically, I lost 300 euros buying a new laptop... I'm angry at this brand!!
