Illegal car wash: fine up to 450 euros in France

It is little known that in France washing cars with water at home or in public places is prohibited. Beyond being illegal, the act, which may seem harmless, has harmful environmental consequences. The water used becomes laden with hydrocarbons, heavy metals and engine oil residues, polluting soils and groundwater. Offenders risk fines of up to 450 euros and, in cases of proven pollution, penalties can reach up to two years in prison and 75,000 euros in fines. However, alternatives exist, such as washing in a professional station or dry cleaning. What do you think of these measures? Does it surprise you?

    It’s ridiculous, like burning vegetables in a barbecue. They tell us about pollution while we are polluted by fuels, countries are at war in Central Europe and the Middle East. It’s becoming unbearable. All of this just to go pay at a gas station. It’s like bringing waste to a recycling center, how do you get to the recycling center... on foot?

      The law is sponsored by car wash stations, certainly! So I don’t wash my car anymore. As soon as it’s dirty enough that I can’t even tell the model, I sell it.
