Hello Julie,
in versions prior to DC:
- press [Ctrl] [K] to open the "Preferences" dialog box
- click on the "Documents" category, and lower the "Documents in the most recent list" field counter to 0.
One caveat: I don't remember in version XI of the Reader if you can go down to 0 or at least to 1. There was a change on this point between two versions. You'll let us know...

Thank you Claire,
It worked wonderfully by setting it to 0 and everything disappeared, however in File Explorer, the Recent locations still show the links to the opened folders and I can't delete them.
Thank you for your help :)- Julie,
Your question now concerns Windows and no longer Acrobat.
I do not know which version of Windows you have, but try this for a version prior to Windows 10:
- right-click on the "Start" button of Windows (at the bottom left of your screen) | "Properties"
- in the [Start Menu] tab, disable "Store and display a list of recently opened files."
For Windows 10:
- click on the "Start" button of Windows (at the bottom left of your screen) | "Settings"
- "Personalization" icon | "Start" (on the left)
- disable "Show recently opened items..."
If these actions do not meet your request, come back and let us know your version or ask your question on a Windows forum.
For a deeper cleaning of traces of consulted files, you can download the CCleaner utility (free) which will do a better job of cleaning.
