Which version of Microsoft Office for Windows 7 (64-bit)?

Hello everyone,

I'm just starting to use computer equipment.
I apologize for my "novice" question and thank you in advance if you read this and provide me with your answer.

I recently acquired a second-hand laptop (HP Elitebook 12 inch).
It runs on Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
I do not wish to change the operating system: I will remain on Windows 7, I will not try to upgrade to Windows 10 on this computer.

I would like to install a Microsoft Office suite on it.
I would like to specify that no version of Microsoft Office is pre-installed on the computer.

I found the option to purchase a Microsoft Office suite via download + activation key for unlimited duration (but for this specific computer only).
I have the choice between the Microsoft Office 2010 suite and the Microsoft Office 2013 suite.
I'm hesitating a lot because I'm unsure which version is best for Windows 7...
The 2013 version is more recent, but is it efficient and suitable for Windows 7?
Or is the 2010 version more appropriate?

Thank you very much in advance!

Have a great day! Best regards,

Sbbz.

Hello Sbbz,

you must be getting lost in this discussion between proponents and opponents of the 64-bit versions...

I am what you would call a professional in office tools, especially Microsoft. I do not claim to settle the debate, but here is simply my opinion:
Whether for professional purposes or as an individual, if you have the possibility, at no extra cost, yes, choose the most recent version of the Office suite, that is to say, version 2016. Otherwise, version 2013.
And this for one reason only: the leap you will have to take will be less significant when you need to change versions. Because, willingly or unwillingly, we are being pushed forward.

That said, Office 2010 is not "outdated" contrary to what I have read above. It is still maintained by Microsoft until 13/10/2020...

Regarding the installation, without hesitation, choose the 32-bit installation.
For that, I can only agree with Eriiic's arguments and those of Microsoft.
And from experience, I have only had problems, including professional ones, with a 64-bit installation. And this applies to all programs in the Office suite, namely Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook.

"Templates" = modèles in French (but "Template" sounds more... knowledgeable ;-). They can be used with almost all versions, and this is surely not where the difference can be made.

Come on, Sbbz, do it as you feel, intuitively ;-))

Good evening C-Claire,

Thank you very much for this response!
It’s kind of you to take the time to write me a detailed message.
The experiences of others can greatly help "novices" like me!

My thoughts are still maturing, although I haven’t made my final choice yet.
For now, I only know that:
- I will buy a "standard" Microsoft Office package with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, and Publisher,
- I will install a 32-bit version, despite my 64-bit system.
I just need to decide between Microsoft Office 2010, 2013, and 2016.
I’m weighing the pros and cons of each option, now that I know everything is fine for my Windows 7.
But also: getting a newer version costs more...

Thank you very much!

Have a great evening! Best regards,
