Hello
I am completely new on CCM (registered today). I hope I will find a kind soul to help me troubleshoot my IBM ThinkPad 600E laptop model 2645 (date from 1998) which runs Windows 2000 (not XP). It worked fine until about a month ago and since then nothing, or not much. I boot it up: after a few seconds it shows error 00173, then error 00163. Then a black screen with a small padlock icon with a 1 inside it and in front of it another small icon with a semblance of a screen. It looks as if it is asking me for a password, because the cursor blinks (password of 6 characters that I no longer have!). If I type anything, then Enter, I get a circle with OK inside, then a blue screen with ERROR, 00173, 00163 and 2 icons: OK and Cancel. If I press OK, I reach another blue screen identical to the previous one, but with an arrow to a book (that must mean I should look for the explanation in the brochure (which of course I don’t have)).
Here are the details: I am fairly useless with computers (you’ve probably noticed), so if you have an easily understandable solution for a novice, I would be grateful and will owe you one.
I should mention that I will never browse the Web with this laptop, so there is little chance it is a virus, but that’s just my guess.
If I am not in the right forum, please let me know as well.
Thank you

Hello and welcome to the hardware world :)
I would say that what’s happening to you is normal, it’s been ten years since the battery on your motherboard has been changed and so it’s worn out
You need to replace a button cell battery that’s on it, there’s only one, you can’t go wrong
Go to an IT store and show them the battery and tell them you want the same one
After that there’s nothing left but to reset the date and time
If there are other problems, ask me questions
