html: link to a local file Solved

Question

Hello,

I am looking to create a link to a PDF file that is located on a local disk.
For that, I am using the following code in my HTML page:
<a href="file:///D:/monFichier.pdf">file</a>

When the HTML file is also located locally (on C drive), the link works fine
(Acrobat Reader successfully opens "monFichier.pdf").

However, when I upload the same HTML file to a website (on Free),
the link no longer works: nothing happens when I click on the link.

Hello,
to make this document accessible, you need to upload it to the server as well, and then use the relative URL of your file. For example, you will have:
<a href="monFichier.pdf">file</a>
provided that monFichier.pdf is located in the same directory as the page containing this code.
If the directory is different, you adjust it:
<a href="/documents/PDF/monFichier.pdf">file</a>
<a href="../documents/monFichier.pdf">file</a> (../ refers to the parent directory)

If you created the site with an editor, it's easier to use the "create a hyperlink" option which will automatically set the correct link for you. I believe this is a matter of absolute and relative addresses.

What you are asking is actually not possible... Your hard drive is not a server, so we cannot access your PDFs from there.
Unless you host them online, there are no other solutions, regardless of the PHP or JavaScript codes you use...

It is possible, but there is something important to understand: when the site is on the Free server, it has nothing to do with your PC anymore. If you want to publish a site online and allow access to files on your computer, you need to:
1) have your computer turned on!
2) have your computer accessible from the internet, which depends on your modem configuration, your firewall... there are a few things to do before it works and is secure,
3) make sure that your computer can be found, or more precisely your IP address, which is possible for example with the no-ip service.

I'm experiencing a similar problem. I have a PHP project that I want to run from an embedded server on a CD (the project plus the server on the CD). That part works. However, in my project, I have a Java applet that needs to write to a text file contained in its folder. So for this to work, there are two solutions: either I copy the HTML page (which contains the applet) and its associated applet and text file to the hard drive, then from my index.php, I call this page (thus opening an HTML file located on the hard drive from the server), or I find a way to modify the Java code to only move the text file so that the Java applet is on the CD and the text file is on the disk (I've been trying in vain for two days...). Does anyone have an idea?

Hello,
I think I have a solution for this:
you just need to use the no-ip software (http://no-ip.com). Of course, you need to sign up on the site first and then run this software (your IP will be the name you created, example: le-pc-de-x.no-ip.org). Then, you'll need a small software that doesn't take up any space called TYPSoft FTP Server, which you'll configure to locate your PDF file. Don't forget to create an "anonymous" account so that the software can allow you to read the PDF whenever you want without having to identify yourself (without letting others access your hard drive). After that, just indicate the address on your web page!
