12 GB RAM usable but only 2.60 GB max used

Hello, I'm reaching out to you after multiple attempts.
I just built a PC with more than 3/4 of the components being new (including the RAM). I installed everything carefully and followed the guidelines.
I reinstalled a clean copy of Windows 7 64 Bits with drivers, etc., including for the graphics card (GeForce GTX 660 2GB), but when I tried to install GTA V, I found it was horrifically slow for having 12GB of RAM.
I checked via the resource monitor and it turned out that even for a heavy demand like the installation of this game, it only used a maximum of 2.60GB of RAM (on average, it fluctuates between 1.80 and 2.30).
I tried different solutions suggested on forums, but none worked.
Ineffective solutions attempted:
- BIOS Update
- Virtual Memory Management
- Virus Scan via MalwareBytes
- Windows Memory Diagnostics and also via Memtest 86+(Hiren's Boot)

Despite all this, nothing works and there's no option to remap memory via the BIOS (Option absent)
Moreover, the PC shutdown is taking longer and longer (10 MINUTES!!!)

Here is a complete list of my configuration:
CPU: AMD FX 4300
GPU: GeForce GTX 660 2GB OC version
RAM: DDR3 1x 8GB & 1x 4GB, all in Gskill 1660 MHz - CL 11
1 HDD 2TB and a 2.5" 250GB drive where the OS is installed (Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bits)

Can you save me?

    The amount of RAM used depends on the need and not on the amount installed... your 12 GB will never be fully utilized...
    now, if your 12 GB are detected as available in the task manager, everything is normal.
    finally, the amount of RAM does not increase performance (it's the lack that affects it)

      Pourtant, il me semble que pour l'exécution de lourdes tâches (comme les retouches photos ou l'installation de jeux), c'est bien la RAM qui influence le temps d'exécution, non ?

      No, the installation of games is impacted by the speed of the hard drive and especially the DVD drive.
      For video editing, you need RAM to store data while processing, and a lack of RAM leads to a lot of slowness.
      I repeat, if your task manager shows 12 GB available and only uses 3, that's normal; if you want to test more RAM usage, open several programs at the same time.
      For games, if there isn't enough RAM, they won't run... for slowness, I would look more towards the graphics card and the CPU.
      As for slowness at shutdown, are there not updates in progress? Are there any faulty programs installed?

      For the downtime, it's settled. As you mentioned, there were programs and other malware lingering, as well as the clearPageFiles in the registry. As for the rest, I'm testing and will get back to you afterwards.

      I tested the RAM by running several programs, and the RAM maxes out at 2.95 GB while simultaneously operating:
      - An Office installation
      - A Malware Bytes scan
      - 5 Google Chrome tabs, including a YouTube video at 2140 resolution
      + Background processes:
      and all of this ends up running very slowly.

      I wouldn't look too much: Windows reinstallation, but with only the 8 GB stick.

    Hi

    Your RAM setup is shaky; we put in either 2x 4GB or 2x 8GB, but not 1x4 and 1x8. Moreover, 8GB of RAM in total is more than enough. To actually benefit from 12GB of RAM, you need to be able to fully utilize 8GB first.

    With "asymmetrical" sticks, dual-channel either doesn't work or works poorly.

        Not necessarily, but it's worth testing, just like all the possible setups in the slots.

        I still have a hard time understanding you with your astronomical amounts of RAM and sometimes "illogical" quantities, of which rarely more than half will be used ^^

    unresolved issue no change.
    The PC is still just as slow to shut down, if not more (20 minutes to shut down) I don't even want to test the GTA V installation.
    Does anyone have another solution?
    Knowing that I installed as much memory because I want to use it for gaming, running GTA V with fairly high graphical settings, and this PC will also be used for video and photo editing. So logically, there is a big demand for memory resources, right?

      Moreover, I have done some cleaning (via ADW cleaner, CCleaner) and modified the ClearPageFile in the registry.
      Since then, the shutdown works correctly (about 30 seconds) and the last ZH Diag report indicates no infections.
      But the RAM issue still persists.

      You have 8 GB of detected memory.
      Is the maximum memory checkbox checked in msconfig? If so, uncheck it.

      Scarface is right, the setup is flawed, the 4 GB stick is not detected and is useless.
      As for RAM usage, as long as the running applications don't strain the RAM, its usage remains normal; personally, aside from the imbalance between 8 and 4, I don't see anything abnormal.

    PS I just ran a small test in gaming situation: (PES 2015):
    The game checker indicates OK for everything, but once the game is launched, my resource monitor still shows 2.20 Go and the game lags terribly (slowed down) without crashing.
    If that can help

    Ouch!
    While digging a bit here and there, I realized that the RAM issue is due to hardware compatibility with my motherboard. It doesn't support my RAM model (oh, the noob!!) I tried overclocking a bit in the BIOS using OC tweaker to reach the right frequency, but it didn't help; once in Windows, the issue remains unresolved.

    As for the drive, I searched through many forums, and unfortunately, none of their solutions (Microsoft Fix It, uninstalling in Device Manager, searching for firmware) yielded results.

      You say that the RAM is not at the right frequency, what makes you say that?

      I think it's the frequency because once I checked in the BIOS and it wasn't that. Now I had to modify the OC Tweaker in the BIOS to overclock a bit, but the settings might not be correct or it doesn't change anything because there are no improvements.

      What I don't understand is why during the long Windows Update (the 205 fixes), the RAM managed to rise to 7 GB. But it did so gradually; it didn't spike all at once, it reached that level roughly halfway through the installation of the updates.
      Does anyone have a clear explanation for this?
      Because on the manufacturer's website for the motherboard, it clearly states that it can support this type of RAM (apparently under OC), so I wonder if I'm just being paranoid and if I need to do some OC with certain settings. The problem is that I don't master overclocking, and I wouldn't want to fry the motherboard or the RAM or CPU since it's brand new!

      Small observation for the DVD reader: actually, I tested it with other DVD ROMs and another game DVD (Assassin's Creed Brotherhood) and it turns out that it's only GTA V that it doesn't detect! What the hell is this m...e?

We've already told you that the PC uses the amount of RAM it needs; if it doesn't need 7 GB, it won't use them...

      I have 8 GB of RAM and as I speak to you, about 3.1 GB are in use... And the only way I can exceed 4 GB is by gaming and launching additional applications.

      Otherwise, when doing a check disk (chkdsk) on a secondary disk, it can go up to 7.5-7.8 GB.

      As for the GTA 5 DVD, an old IDE drive, probably a dirty lens, and a DVD of poorer quality, that's entirely possible.
